It's time to read and vote for your favorite article in the 2013 Write-Off Contest! The four finalist's articles are featured in the May 13 newsletter and can be found through this link. Hurry! Voting ends May 18.
In order to give recognition to the best of the best in the world of gardening, the members of Dave's Garden have nominated and subsequently voted on their favorites in the world of gardening.
This is different than any other "editorial award" program you've ever seen, where a group of people behind closed doors use politics and other private means to determine who gets which award. Rather, this is a a 100% member-driven award program, where the awards have been selected by our membership!! This follows with our slogan of "For Gardeners... By Gardeners"
After tallying all the votes for this year's Dave's Garden Members' Choice Awards, I'm very pleased to announce the following results:
Favorite Seed Source: Not too surprising, the local garden centers are DG members' favorite place to buy seeds, with Park Seed taking a very close second place. Park Seed was last year's #1 winner.
Favorite Plant Source: Again, the local garden center is also the favorite place to buy plants for nearly two-thirds of our members.
Favorite Gardening Merchandise: Tillers are the favorite garden-related merchandise, with the 'Claw' coming in second place.
Favorite Gardening Organization Overall: I'm positive that Seed Saver's Exchange will be very pleased to learn they are the favorite garden organization with 40% of our members; Lowes received the next highest number of votes. This is Lowes' second year to enjoy a Dave's Garden Members' Choice award.
Favorite Gardening Event: DG members' favorite gardening events are plant swaps and sales, and the 2002 Dave's Garden Roundup was top pick for 22% of the voters, making it the second favorite.
Favorite Magazine: The top rated magazine among DG members is Birds and Blooms, with Garden Gate a close second.
Favorite Television Program: Our favorite television gardening program is Gardening by the Yard with Paul James, and Victory Garden was the second most highly-rated choice.
Favorite Book: For the second year in a row, the gardening book of choice is the American Horticultural Society's A-Z Encyclopedia, not surprising considering the completeness of the book.
Best Plant Identifer: We have so many terrific members within our ranks, we created a few new categories this year. One of the new categories was to select the member who is best at identifying mystery plants, and we had several excellent candidates. The member who was voted best at identifying plants is Baa.
Best Plant Photographer: Our favorite DG photographer is JoanMN, with Evert a very close second.
Most Helpful Member: Selecting the most helpful and knowledgeable member was the closest contest among all the categories, with the top 3 members being neck and neck until the polls closed, but Calalily won in the end, with 22% of the votes. go_vols and poppysue tied for second place at 20%.
Lifetime Achievement Award: A special category that doesn't appear on the ballot is one that was created and selected by the DG administrators. A "Lifetime Achievement Award" goes to poppysue, who, from almost the very beginning of Dave's Garden, has given much of her time, talent and effort to help make Dave's Garden what it is today.
Favorite DG Feature: Receiving more than half the votes, the undisputed favorite feature of Dave's Garden are the Discussion Forums, and the favorite forum is Photos.
A hearty congratulations to those individuals and companies that were selected, and a big thanks to all of you who took the time to write in your choices and then vote on the top picks.
Thank you also for the many thoughtful suggestions you gave for improvements and changes to the site. They will all be carefully reviewed and considered for future features. Until next year...
The DG Team (Dave, Trish, and Vols)
