This interesting flightless grasshopper was about 4 cm long. It was found on a dry basalt hill top north of Toowoomba in Queensland on 26th April, 2008. The one photographed is the female. The much smaller male was sitting on her back, but hopped off after I disturbed it. They were on a nearby Calotis lappulacea bush when I found them. The vegetation community consisted of ironbark (Eucalyptus crebra), wilga (Geijera salicifolia), tree pear (Opuntia tomentosa), and Lantana (Lantana camara), with a grassy and weedy understorey.
I showed the photo to the entomologist David Rentz, who tells me it is the Southern Form of Monistria pustulifera.
