screened loam is growinggrass is growing out of the screened loam, so today I was thinking -- why not just plant my veggies in there because I'm not going to get them into the raised beds this summer? Then I can just shovel the mulch right over and water easily. Why not? Do I really care what it looks like? If I did, would I let my lawn get into the shape it is? I can test the soil mixture tonight to see if it needs amending.

dirt for koi bedgot 2 yards of dirt (half screened loam, half compost) and a yard of mulch. Turns out I only had lumber for three beds, so I went to Home Depot and got lumber for 4th bed. First three from 12" wood, mistakenly got 10" this time, but oh well.
Supposed to thunderstorm tomorrow afternoon, so want to get dirt in the beds tomorrow. I've screwed togather three, need to do 4th tomorrow.
Have overly ambitious plans to dig out sand, level, etc. but I'll probably not do that. I DO want to do plastic for walkway to keep weeds out. Will regular black plastic be durable enough? Maybe not, I may need to do koi pond liner. That will be a job and a half ...

add carrots and beets to salad greens containers?or do those root veggies need more sun?
Saturday, June 9, 2012
raised bedsI'm definitely going to add as many raised beds on top of koi pond area as I can. I'll put canteloupe, eggplant, and some herbs there.
Salad greens will go into deck containers.

herbs on deck?Thinking I can plant my garlic chives, basil and parsley in deck containers. Maybe I can add the oregano that's in the house. Oh, I also have sage, stevia and thyme. I'll just plant it all and see what grows!
June 8 -- hmmm, actually I think I need to plant salad greens in there.

CantaloupeWhy don't I put them in raised beds in former koi pond area? That will get lots of sun all summer as well as be warmer. But what about watering? They'll have room to spread. Then I could put eggplant at south trellis. I'll only save two plants. I still need to plan where the rest of my veggie garden will go.

Bed FourI planted zucchini and lots of corn there today after prepping bed. I also leveled the bed as best I could, we'll see how that works.

more veggies? It's time to plant carrots and maybe salad greens, but where? Do I pull up the garlic and plant them both there? It's also time to plant kale. Then I could plant kale in what was last year's zucchini bed (bed 3). Zucchini and corn in bed 4? New bed for other brassicas? What about eggplant? Where do I plant them? They need lots of room.
How about straw bale idea for old pond site? Herbs only?

straw bale beds?Just read up on straw bale gardening, which sounds very interesting. What if I buy four or five straw bales from Spillman Dairy and mount them on top of stone wall for strawberry beds? Certainly worth thinking about.
Where else could this work? What about in the sandpile in the back yard? I could do a real herb garden there with straw bales. As the bales decompose, that would solve my garden soil issue.
Maybe I can also use this instead of raised beds, although I still have issue of level ground -- use the chainsaw to cut the bales at an angle?

new bedsI'll need to adjust placement since the raspberry is coming back. I'll need two more raspberry plants too.
Will use one of the 3' sq beds for the asparagus bed. I can put another where the new bed is from last year. Third can go where seedlings are now. That will leave room for more raspberries. Hope that will give me enough new space for veggies I want to grow.

brassicasI've decided I'll make a couple of new beds for them, where raspberry remains are currently. Bought lumber to make three 3'x3' 12" raised beds.

strawberriesok, since I'm not putting brassicas near bottom of wall, maybe I can plant strawberries on top of wall. Need to dig up dianthus.

brassicadecided to put a new bed for broccoli, kale, cauliflower and brussel sprouts to the south of already existing beds. need to move kneeled trees first.

raised bedsTentative sketch in book for raised bed layout, involves moving all brassica to bed under stone wall. Previous draft saved that for wildflowers. New idea -- enough room to mix them together?
