Limnathes douglasii
These are from seeds Tabasco in Ohio sent me. This picture is dated 4-29-08, winter sown and the tag lists the RID number from my journal. This plant is grown for attracting beneficial insects, provided they don't bother my cats. They will attract lady bugs to the area. That's a good thing.

These babies are the reason for my winter sowing
Mama EBST laid eggs on May 1st. She was busy laying on both Bronze Fennel and Parsley. Each day that I cut more host plants for the cages, more eggs are added to the cages and increases their survival rate.

There's a weed creeping by underground runners all in my beds along the edge of the pond. It's even floating on top of the water. I need to get a good photo of it, have it ided and destroy it.

Pond gardens
All of my winter sown native species plants will be transplanted around the margins of my pond and high bank. This is a picture of the North side (geese) and the East side (bluebird house).
That northend bank doesn't look that steep until the fat lady with the hat and cell phone bends overs to transplant seedlings. Lost two good cell phones rolling into that pond, twice. Now let's see how many times I repeat last year's fiascoes.

2008 Winter Sown Journal
Things to do tonight to prepare for the next set of containers to sow:
1. Choose next batch of ws seed packets to sow
2. locate those seeds in journals
3. move to "2008 winter sow" Journal if
necessary
4. change status to "sown canidate"
5. print list via access by status "sown canidate"

name
7. choose appropriate size container for amount
of seed packets, using more than 1 container
if neccessary
8. write RID on several areas of container top
and bottom
9. Place seed and labels in containers & take to
workshop for the next day of sowing

Adding sand
I'm finding it difficult to winter sow seeds that are extremely small, dust like, into my containers so that I get an even spread. I'm now putting sand into the seed packets and giving it a shake, shaking it all out into my containers.

Seed starting charts
I recently tagged this thread. Wonderful collection of links for information on starting seeds. No one site lists every seed known to man. It takes searching various sites to read about the proper germination for a particular seed. Sometimes, just googling takes hours of scanning & speed reading to find what I need. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/690295/

2008 Winter Sow Seed Journal
Entered all the seeds I received from the winter sow seed swap yesterday. I'll start winter sowing seeds today. Because it's so cold, I'll set up a winter sowing station inside my heated workshop to pot up my jugs and sow the seeds. The jugs will sit under the shade of the pine tree in the dogless dog pen. I'll still have to put a screen over the top to keep Katie from digging into my containers until I can find someone to help me fix the broken gate. After the gate's fixed, I can securely winter sow in the dogless dogpen, while my dogs have free range to roam. That dog pen will also serve as a seedling bed for my daylilies. Future plan for that dog pen is to build a lean-to shade house against the back workshop wall.
Recordkeeping Plans
Plan to improve my wintersowing recordkeeping. I want to do a better job of documenting my sown seeds in my journal, using milestones and timely updating statuses. That way, I can printout only those entries with the same status eventhough they are listed in the same journal. Using the RID feature will also help me find the seed entry again when I need to locate the entry without having to look through the whole list on seeds in every journal. The containers will be marked with the Rid number and so will the markers. I wrote both the RID number and plant name of the container, but soon realized that was over-kill and decided to only use the RID number.
I also want to keep a pictured record of questionable seeds sown. Because I have so many seeds marked with the same genius name but of unknown species, taking a picture may help in research later. Coreopsis is one in particular that I have received in seed swaps where the package was only labeled Coreopsis. The differences in the appearance of the seeds tells me they are of different species. Taking pictures of the seed, seedling, first set of true leaves and blooms may be more than I can keep up with, but at least the plan and intention is good. Just because something doesn’t do what you planned it to do doesn’t mean it’s useless.’ Thomas Alva Edison
Still need to decide which seeds to buy for the next swap I'll be in. I just can't trade off seeds I've already received in trades. Call it my high standard if you will, but if I'm not sure of the botanical name of a package of seeds, how can I, in good conscience, pass it to someone else to sow? Heaven help me if I unknowingly spread Kudzu across the country.
I found this site, Sweet Nectar Nursery that specializes in butterfly friendly plants. I'm hoping I have planted and saved seeds to some of the same plants they sell. I'll study this website for ideas. http://www.sweetnectarnursery.com/ (I looked, nothing really jumped out at me)

preparing for today's first day of winter sowing
1. Printout 2008 wintersow journal by "winter sown container" status, match with seed packages in inventory box (wrote the RID # on the seed pks as I entered them into the journal)
2. Review any questionable sowing requirements
2. Take the camera, seed box, printout, labels and paint pens to workshop
3. Write the botanical name and the journal RID numbers on the containers before filling with soil (containers were prepped with drainage holes at the time I collected them throughout the year then storaged. So glad that part was already done!)
4. Fill with soil. Remember to use a sand mix for those seeds that require a sandy loam
5. Water throughly and allow to drain for at least one hour before sowing seed
6. Place a minimum of two stick labels in each container just before sowing its seeds
7. Take picture of the seeds & their package just before sowing (only for those ??able coreopsis)
8. .Sow seeds into their marked containers
9. place containers under the pine tree
10.Schedule time for repeating this process for Mon and Tues 21st and 22nd
I just realized the link updates when the journal updates. Oh well. I'll cut and paste a list next time. Eleven containers were sown Sun. 1-20-08

Inside Germination Records
Journal RID #163528
Aristolochia fimbriata, White Veined Dutchman's Pipe
Received seeds from Beckygardener's first annual Butterfly & Hummer Seed Swap fall '07. Jan 4th I sowed some, they germinated and by the 10th, through my neglect, died of thirst.
Resowed some on the 12th of Jan. and they had germinated by the 16th. Pulled down the zip lock bag and watering from the bottom while still on the heat mat. 24/7 under lights.

Lablab purpureus, Hyacinth Bean
I'm fairly sure these seeds were given to me in an '07 Valentines Seed Swap. 100% germination almost a year later, yea! Started seeds on a heating mat under lights in my sunroom on Jan. 4. When I remembered to check on them Jan 10th, they had germinated. I immediately pulled down the ziplock bag and water from the bottom while still on the heating mat. This is what the seedlings look like today, Jan 20, '08

Gardening by the moon
Thanks to Gapeahen, my dear friend has been encouraging me to try the centuries old farming technique of gardening by the phases of the moon this year. Donna gave me a calendar she picked up at the drug store for free which includes a legend that corresponds to the symbols on each day on the calendar, plus a farmer's almanac. Each day's symbol advices you on the best gardening chore for that particular phase the moon happens to be in. From what I read from googling the subject, plants respond to the moon's gravitational pull on water. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/07/0710_030710_... http://www.gardeningbythemoon.com/phases.html Since this is an age-old technique, I do not plan on buying moon gardening material from new companies that popped up and jumped on the band wagon due to a rising popularity in moon phases. I will try to follow Donna's lead and sow seed on fertile days, plant above ground plants on their best days and, tubers, rhizones etc on their best days. I may even try my hand at growing a few vegatables within my flower beds since the calendar tells me the best days to harvest crops. Heck, even on the destory days I can be productively gardening, giving me the incentive to weed my beds and be on the attack of the infamous snail.

Updated my Garden Organizer Database
Made a list of my seed list inventory today. It's not complete since I have failed to put all my seed envelops all in one place. Still need to locate where I put the last order I made from Parks. Also need to add current trades when I get them.
1. cross match my seed inventory with the list of suggested ws seeds list for both perenials and annuals. PARTIALLY COMPLETED
2. list my winter sown seed list in my journal. PARTIALLY COMPLETED TO THE S'S
3. enter my actual winter sown list into my data base.
4. prepare containers
5. label containers three ways
6.. prepare outside area for protection against the elements
