Citrus and SummerClasses officially resume tomorrow and I have been embarking on summer clean up and preparing for .Fall.
Yesterday I purchased three 64 qt bags of local potting mix at lowes for four dollars each. I also purchased two large brown pots and two smaller grey pots. Each has an element of self watering. In the brown pots I am planting a meyer lemon, and a bearss seedless lime.
I am anxious to plant the fall garden, but not sure about the timing.
My parsnips came up yesterday. I have four or five so far. I still plan to add peas to this planter when the weather cools.
My other red planter still has little swiss chard sprouts, but the have not grown true leaves yet. Today I reseed the pot a bit to see what will happen with both swiss chard and hot peppers.
Yesterday we dug up the volunteer trees out front and placed one in the backyard. It does not look well, but may perk up when the weather cools down.
the apple trees were both ravished by a disease i think it was rust. The far one is dead. The close on has some new growth I sprayed with rust eliminator stuff, but I do not know if it will make it.
The two blackberries that took root are both putting out new shoots, and I had to add a second wire to tie them to, it is 42 inches off the ground.
Another cucumber has sprouted, which is good since I lost the first one while in the NV thespian retreat.
About 5 of the green beans I placed in the raised bed sprouted. I am going to go ahead and reseed them, and the corn one last time. I feel august was just too hot for the corn only two really took. the squash in the blackberry area looks good.

parsnips and moreIce Chest Update: Lost one of the better bush tomato plants to transplanting, but the other one is doing nicely. This morning I noticed four little sprouts around the tomato. They appear to be pepper seedlings. I am wondering how they got there. Perhaps when seeding I planted too many things in one peet cell, but That seems unlikely because I do on seed per cell not six. The top of the ice chest was all new miracle grow potting mix. But I did reuse some potting mix at the bottom.
I painted the inside of 7 cinder block holes a yesterday. Hopefully this will help them retain water.
Today I began placing seeds in the painted holes. Starting from the shed #8 is seven top turnips, #10 are lisbon bunching onions, #15 is summer savory.
Also in the second large red planter I seeded 9 parsnips (hollow crown) after soaking the seeds for 24 hours. I placed a large tomato cage in with them because I plan to add peas to the planter when the weather cools off.
Still dealing with mice in/ under shed. They dug into the corn patch.
Yesterday we ate beets for the first time (from gram and pop). Wash well, boil with skins on. Remove skins and serve with butter.
Also one of the cucumbers sprouted today.

GerminationSo far I have not seen anything from the cucumbers (been 8 days). This morning I have two little "bright light" swiss chard seedling poking up out of the soil in red planter #1. One appears to be red and one appears to be yellow! Hooray.
One of the tomatoes in ice chest did not make it, but the other is doing well.
The green beans I placed in raised bed are also beginning to germinate, I have seen three or four popping up.

More fun with direct seedingSome of the corn has wilted or died so I am going to be direct seeding corn in the "holes" left in my planting block. Perhaps it is still a bit too hot for them. We shall see.
I have been using my fresh basil in salads and it is Delicious.
The black berries are continuing to grow well. So far only two of the bush beans I planted next to them have sprouted. Both squash plants I placed by them seem to be doing well.
One of the squash in the three sisters plot died, one looks about the same as when planted, and one has shot up with two or three new leaves. I placed Epsom salt on the base of it last week and will probably Epson salt the rest. About four of the pole beans have sprouted in the three sisters.
I added 30 tender bounty bush beans to the regular garden yesterday. I placed them in front of the basil between the established tomatoes and the new pepper transplants.

Red Planter #1Well today marks the end of our three day cloudy weather.
I turned the soil in one of the red planters and added a bunch of pine cones to the bottom. This will help keep it light but full. I reused the soil in the planter after turning it.
Three hot peppers from mix in a triangular formation. In between each hot pepper I planted a "bright lights" swiss chard. I also planted one "Lucullus" swiss chard in the middle.
I directed seeded two cucumber seeds in the garden yesterday and put out 2 small broccoli transplants, and 4 bibb lettuce under tomatoes for shade. PLaced my last squash seedling in blackberry patch as well.
