Secret Garden ProjectI amstarting my new garden today. I started to dig down to remove any barn grass roots that still remained in the soil and removing all the large pieces of old tree branches. We had 6 yards of compost delivered to amend the soil and help bring it up to the correct level.

Entry Border ArborThis is how it looked before. I've been slowly enlargening the beds. My DH might have a heartattack if I do them the size I want all at once. He likes his lawn.

West Side Foundation BorderView from deck looking down. It has a more defined look now. Although the shape isn't quite perfect. Hopefully I'll get it just right once I edge it a few times during it's next growing season. Looking at it from this angle makes me think the side further away needs to be brought further out into a bigger circle.

West Side Foundation BorderThis view from further out shows how the Entry Border turns into the West Side Border. I was trying to make the beds where the arbor is, curve out, where before they were just flush with the arbor. My goal is to make the arbor flow better with shape of the beds.

West Side Foundation BorderThis is what it looked like when I was done. Of course everything looks dead, so it should look much better during the growing season.

Fence Border 4All ready for planting, now what will I plant ..............

Fence Border 1I spent all day Saturday finishing hardscaping, one part of the fence border, I will be planting this year. Here is the area with most of the sod dug up and showing my very sandy soil. I had spent a few hours throughout the week ripping up the sod and it was my goal to finish yesterday. The darker colored soil was only from a thin layer of loam we had put down to grow grass, that lighter colored stuff is what remained after the sod was removed.

Blooming Bulb OrderI received my Blooming Bulb order on the 15th. Today I am potting up the lily bulbs and Blue Anemone blanda from the order. The lily bulbs didn't all look so hot so I am potting them individually so I can see how many actually do well. I got a tip to soak the Anemone tubers in warm water, then pot them up and keep them indoors until they grow foliage. I guess they don't root well in the cool soil of spring.
Here is a picture of the asiatic lily bulbs I got. Wonder what is the deal with those ones that have black stuff on them? They are maybe 2" tall and out of all 25 only one looked really nice. : ( I don't know if that is normal for asiatic lily bulbs, I have had much better luck with orientals so far.
