My Timeline for Sun and Shade Around My House
Mixed in with my garden seeds, I found a paper (dated June 1, 2011)where I had jotted down approximate sun and shade times as they occured during the day around my house. Should be a decent reference for the gardening season of 2012.
Very front of property - shade in am, sunny 12-5 pm
under tree in front - sun til 11:00 am, then shade on
(top) Front railing at front of house - sun by10:30 am, shade 5pm on
Larger front garden - sun / shade 10:00 - 5:00
Front of railing on ground - shade til noon, sun from 12-5
Back railing - shade / sun in am
sun from 12 pm on
area under front windows of house - shade in am, then sun 1-5
By June all the trees are leafed out and much of the shade cover is created by the trees in front of house within the property line. The house itself also provides quite a bit of shade.
Much more shade in the front - EXCEPT - by the road and mailbox where it is VERY SUNNY.
*** must remember to transplant or sow seeds of sun loving flowers that favor dry and sunny conditions and are drought tolerant such as morning glories and poppies there.***
The back deck gets fairly strong sun all afternoon. Plant sun loving plants there in pots, but remember to check for needed watering. Make sure pots are rather large to retain water well. Can also move pots if conditions become too hot and dry and plants need shade. *** deck starts to become shaded from sliding glass door outward to end of the deck from about 1:00 pm on. ***

The trees in front have grown larger, so the front garden now becomes shadier by early afternoon.
