Viewing palmbob's Garden Diary: Bob Cartoons
Thursday, June 5, 2008As Bob's precious palms grow as tall as the roof, he prepares ahead for next Christmas should Santa and his palm-eating reindeer should even think of landing on his roof.
Thursday, June 5, 2008Bob finds doing his own back yard plumbing is far more complicated than he imagined.
Thursday, June 5, 2008Bob does a moment of silence on this memorial day at the grave site of his dead plants... and then quickly takes a bucket of compost.
Thursday, June 5, 2008Bob can't understand why the mail man just dumps the mail on the path to the house when the mail box is sitting right there by the door.
Thursday, June 5, 2008Bob discovers a recipe and is delighted to discover he can use all the old fruit he had originally just tossed away, as he creates his new dish of Fruit Compost.
Thursday, June 5, 2008Bob is surprised and disappointed to find his venus fly trap did NOT respond to his extra care. He tried hard to recreate the atmosphere of Venus with multiple heat lamps and a bottle of ammonia.

Thursday, June 5, 2008Bob is the unfortunately collateral damage as his venus fly trap goes for a fly but misses
Thursday, June 5, 2008Bob always feels like a grave robber when he goes to his old compost pile made up of dead plants... so he usually dresses the part and 'robs' the pile in the dead of night
Thursday, June 5, 2008Bob stands in one place so long staring at a palm that Oxalis begins to grow on him
Thursday, June 5, 2008Bob starts his career as a PI by trying to identify plants based on clues he discovers.... hmmm... a cactus he thinks... wonder what species...?
Thursday, June 5, 2008Using all the tools available to him as a PI (plant identifier/investigator), Bob looks over the damage done to this plant hoping some clue will make itself apparent as to what could have done this sort of thing.
Thursday, June 5, 2008Excitedly, Bob tears open the packaging for his Gnu Garden Tool he got from Home Depot... thank goodness he kept the receipt!
Thursday, June 5, 2008Bob has mastered the art of palm reading... here he is enjoying a good one, and a two parter at that.
Thursday, June 5, 2008Making his monthly batch of toxic bug juice (a 'family recipe which thankfully will follow him to the grave), Bob becomes dizzy, nauseous and can even feel his liver enzymes going up... but at least his lice problem will be taken care of...
Thursday, June 5, 2008Bob spends far too much time digging in soil and develops a severe case of earthworms
Thursday, June 5, 2008Bob just can't keep up with the same level of effort and respect he gave his first few plants that died on him. Now he just struggles to even dig the mass graves.
Wednesday, April 9, 2008Thinking all women like cut plants and a tasty treat for Easter, Bob cuts some of his girlfriend's favorite plants, and roasts a little bunny he discovered in the garden... to his surprise, she seemed less than pleased.
Wednesday, April 9, 2008Bob's approach to plant medicine: simple case on the left, more complicated on the right
Wednesday, April 9, 2008Bob assumed incorrectly that Morning Glory was safe to deal with at other times of the day than morning...
Wednesday, April 9, 2008During Bob's last visit to Chucky Cheese, he saw a new way to deal with gophers and decided to try it out in the garden.
Wednesday, April 9, 2008
Wednesday, April 9, 2008Bob often made a needed trip the Emergency Room following his visits to the local botanical gardens (distraction problems)
Wednesday, April 9, 2008Having gotten the idea from one of the Davesgarden videos, out in the privacy of his garden, Bob smokes some weed
Wednesday, April 9, 2008Bob always obliges the botanical garden guards when asked to look through his backback. He would never want to be accused of smuggling seeds or seedlings out of the gardens.
Wednesday, April 9, 2008Bob still needs to do some work on his new automatic sprinkler system
Wednesday, April 9, 2008Lessons in Plant Behavior 1: in an effort to 'teach the Magnolia a lesson' for dropping leaves in the spring, Bob withholds water. Unfortunately this had the opposite effect and the tree lost all its leaves at once.
Wednesday, April 9, 2008The Down Side of being a Cartoon: The rose, sensing Bob's preference for the obviously less beautiful cactus, decides to do a little artistic editing of its own (do not be alarmed... this only happens in cartoons!)
Wednesday, April 9, 2008Bob is becoming concerned that this deciduous phase is lasting beyond the normal season
Wednesday, April 9, 2008Lessons in planning ahead 1: Bob eventually learns why planting a cactus garden underneath a deciduous tree is not a good idea
Wednesday, April 9, 2008part 1: Bob admires the amazing symmetry of the Orb Weaver's creation
Wednesday, April 9, 2008part 2: he just wishes he would notice the webs a bit sooner while perusing the garden
Wednesday, April 9, 2008The best part about ordering plants from tropical places is the anticipation of their arrival. Unfortunately once he gets them, Bob invariably loses most of them and the heartache weighs heavily on him. So to avoid needless disappointment, he happily tosses each new order in the trash avoiding the painful period of attachment and loss.
Wednesday, April 9, 2008Finding the weeds impossible to reach in the spinier, overplanted depths of the cactus garden, Bob comes up with the cleaver idea of 'fishing' out the weeds beyond his reach. He dangles a small pot of enticingly fertile soil, and as the unsuspecting weed spreads into the pot, he yanks the hapless plant right out of the ground. Of course this method of weeding takes much more patience than most can afford.
Wednesday, April 9, 2008Bob admires his mature palms- one is even growing a new finger. Also visible in his palm garden are a ponytail palm, a macaw palm and a cat palm. Also visible is a small seedling with just the tip of one finger coming up.
Wednesday, April 9, 2008Bob realizes a pomeranian is a poor choice of dog to own when one also has a lot of cacti and succulents.

Wednesday, February 6, 2008Bob discovers to his disbelief, only after repeated attempts, that aloe vera leaves are NOT good for his skin no matter how many times he 'applies' them.
Wednesday, February 6, 2008Annual versus Perenial... sort of matters if it's something Bob is growing or not...
Wednesday, February 6, 2008Desperate to find more planting space, Bob digs up the patio bricks one at a time
Wednesday, February 6, 2008In an attempt to show his girlfriend that he did NOT overplant the front yard as he had promised not to do, Bob points at a large, empty 3' x 3' expanse with nothing planted in it
Wednesday, February 6, 2008Due to the nature of his plants, all Bob's pets have to wear safety glasses
Wednesday, February 6, 2008Not being a young gardener anymore, Bob goes with the plant-for-NOW philosophy, ignoring future implications (those will be someone else's problems). So he plants one of his many small planter boxes with some of his favorite plants:
Wednesday, February 6, 2008Perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime event in nature, Bob prepares to get a good photo of the floral equivalent of a lunar eclipse- when his moon flower grows up in front of his sun flower.
Saturday, February 2, 2008Butia archeri is a very slow growing palm, for those that don't know palms... and never gets large anyway.
Saturday, February 2, 2008This cartoon was done 5 years ago when I was spending more time in the tropics.. .sadly, not recently... but less tropical diseases that way, I guess

Wednesday, January 30, 2008Being a Uber Gardener, many Davesgarden members think Bob actaully knows something about growing plants. And Bob does his best to give them a long, thoughtful answer... if the darts dictate he should.
Saturday, January 12, 2008Gonna start loading Bob Cartoons here in the hopes I can link them to articles I write with them in them.
Here's the first one- don't have the exact wording down but will edit these later on
Bob suddenly notices that he does NOT have a green thumb... in fact, it is a decidedly brownish color... wow, that explains a lot!
Saturday, January 12, 2008Bob proudly admires his sticker collection: Opuntia, agave, dasylirion, Echinopsis, Encephalartos, Pilosocereus... even a hint of Lantana and Euphorbia... best and most painful collection in the neighborhood
Saturday, January 12, 2008Bob decides to act pre-emptively this year and get the darn leaves raked up BEFoRE they fall on to the cactus garden below.
Saturday, January 12, 2008All it took was some water, a little fertilizer and a summer and Bob has the hugest, lushest mass of weeds in the neighborhood... and people said gardening was hard work!
