Here's what happened....We moved in the middle of summer. All the veggies were huge and going nuts, and it made them hard to move and transport to our new home. The movers refused to touch the huge, ungainly, and prickly cucumber vines and the associated trellis, and quite frankly I couldn’t blame them. The tomatoes had already been producing like mad, and gotten completely out of control by this point. They had grown tall enough to touch the balcony's overhang, and then bent over with the weight of all those tomatoes. We had to both bend and cut many tomato branches during the move, but once they settled into their new home they just shot up more branches and continued blooming and fruiting like crazy. All of our tomatoes survived the move, but incredible tomato production took place solely in the earthbox. I do think the earthboxes really made a difference in productivity, both with the tomatoes and peppers. I had tomatoes and peppers in other planters as well, but they didn't produce like those in the earthbox.

tomatoes gone wild!yeah, we needed a bit more support for these monsters. They totally overwhelmed the peppers next to them, but there simply wasn't enough room to do anything about it.

the annual planterThis is my annual "garden." I just crowded everything in there together, and it seemed to work out pretty well.

here's how it looks so fartomatoes in the earthbox on the left, the cucumbers starting to grow next to their trellis in the middle, and my grandpa's Japanese maple on the left.

tomatoes againThe tomatoes started blooming and growing like mad. There were two big fuzzy black bumble bees (Bumble and Bimble) that spent all day collecting pollen from the tomato blossoms. In reality, there were probably more than two bees, and the only time I could "tell them apart" was when they were together...oh well, I had fun with them anyhow ;-).

more tomatoesI just couldn't resist getting more tomatoes. The herb and pepper strawberry pot on the right was just taking off in this pic, and my annual "garden" is in the front.

peppers in strawberry pots?I decided to put herbs and peppers in strawberry pots to maximize growing space. I wasn't too sure it would work out very well, but thought it would be fun to try. We also bought another earthbox for some more peppers (see the right side of the pic), since the tomatoes were doing so well in the first earthbox.

earthbox experimentI had extremely limited space, so I decided to experiment with various planters and space-saving techniques. I saw an earthbox at a local nursery, and decided to try growing tomatoes in it.

seedlingsI decided to try growing veggies on the balcony in 2007. I started:
-tomatoes (cherry and regular. sungold was the best cherry, earlygirll was the best reg size)
-sweet and bell peppers (jimmy nardello sweet italian frying pepper was the best, but the bells were tasty too)
-various chiles which were all extremely productive. I am a sucker for the unusual, so I tried the lemon drop peppers. They were beautiful, incredibly prolific, and no one wanted to eat them because they were so hot.

before shotHere's how it looked when we moved in. We had to find homes for the majoirty of our plants from the patio garden, since this was such a smaller space. Who knew we would be able to cram so many plants onto this balcony just a couple years later...and it didn't even collapse!
