From beginning as the study of indigenous farming techniques in the early 1900s, organic gardening encourages composting, vermicomposting, companion planting and other methods that eliminate the need for artificial fertilizers, pesticides, and bio-engineering.

Organic gardening today is practiced in large scale farming as well as in the backyard vegetable gardens and orchards.
