Countrymom wrote: I live on he 5th floor of an apartment building in northern Ohio. This is my first year growing plants in containers. So far, so good. I have pansies, which are almost done for this year. I plan to replace them with mums which will bloom later one. I have two hanging baskets of petunias, which are doing beautifully, despite the wind. I have one big square pot planted with geraniums, basil, and a couple herbs. It is doing very well.
I put one put of variegated geraniums in a bird bath, but it isn't going to last much longer. It can't take the heat.
I use Miracle Grow spikes once a month. I have discovered that plants in pots need watered every day. I use a water meter and check the pots every morning.
I love my little garden on the balcony. I moved from 3 acres, filled with perennials, and gardening had become overwhelming for me. This little balcony takes me about 45 minutes per day and I don't get hot or dirty !
I hope you like your little garden too. In Florida, I am sure you will have many more options, since the weather doesn't get so cold.
