Nice to see the pictures in your article. We moved to Texas from Canada where there are few bugs of any sort. There a big daddy long legs is about 1 1/2 inches across. Here in Texas I've had some bigger than my hand on my bedroom walls. After finding a tarantula on our front porch, I decided I'd better get a book to familiarize myself with the local populations and to desensitize myself. It turned out to be a good thing. I had studied the picture of the yellow orb spider and it's crazy web in the book. A few days later I was out in the garden, weeding. I realized I could see a web near my face. As I backed up, it came into focus, and I recognized the 'lightning strike' and told myself, that's the yellow and black spider. After backing another foot, my eyes finally focused on her. I had nearly leaned right in to her. If I hadn't seen that distinctive spider in the book first, I would have probably broke my leg backing away. As it was, I was just glad I had backed up twice before my eyes focused on it. And they sure are pretty....now.
