The new laundry room is a large closet in the hallway. I need organizational inspiration; am a laundry slob.

DH bought side-by-side washer & dryer. How to efficiently use the wall area above?

Where to put dirty clothes? (used to make piles on the floor of basement laundry!)
Hate hampers where all the aromas mix. GAG.

Inspiration, please.

Is there room above to install either cabinets or shelves? The laundry room at my old house had kitchen cabinets mounted above the W&D and I used those to store cleaning products, extra laundry detergent, etc. I liked the cabinets because you could close them and can't see anything so it looks nice and neat, but if you don't mind seeing the stuff you could do shelves which would probably be cheaper.

As far as where to put the clothes, if you don't want piles on the floor but don't like hampers I'm not quite sure what else you would do? Only thing I can think of is to put out several of the plastic open-top laundry baskets, you could use those to put the piles in so they're not on the floor, but they don't have lids that close so maybe the smells would be less than the hamper.

I have something like this: [HYPERLINK@tinyurl.com]

Mine actually has 3 separate 'bags' that hang on a detachable support between the top rails, but the idea is similar. It's like a hamper, but you can take the bags off & send them through the wash too, if they get dirty or smelly. The wheeled cart also makes it easy to get out of the way to retrieve a dropped sock or to sweep under it.

Hint, though - I tried a cheap one first, but it wasn't very sturdy. Just the act of filling & emptying it made it sway and eventually (like in under 3 months), it just collapsed. The 'expensive' ones aren't that much more, & the one I have now is MUCH more study - it should last years, at least.

Thank you both for good ideas.

Am determined not to let the detritus flow into the hallway. (Godd Luck!)

After trying hampers, rolling hampers, and numerous other contraptions, I finally settled on a laundry basket system.

Each bedroom in our house has an identical, medium-sized laundry basket (the occupant decides where it is stored; DH's and mine is just outside our miniscule bathroom.) One kid leaves theirs next to their door; another one puts theirs in their closet. Dirty clothes and sheets get tossed in the baskets, and everyone is responsible for getting their baskets to the laundry room on a regular basis - once or twice a week usually.

Another basket that fits in the bottom of the hall bathroom's linen closet. Bath towels and items removed in the bathroom can be tossed down there and the basket makes its way to the laundry room a couple times a week.

Dirty clothes come in; the baskets get sent back with whatever clean, folded items belong in that room - the bathroom's basket usually has a load of folded towels to tote back in it.

I can't say I keep the laundry 100% caught up all the time (but I have a laundry room so I have the luxury of letting it pile up for a few days if I don't get to it.)

But the basket system works pretty well, and could work for your situation, especially if you can put everyone on a rotating schedule so all the baskets don't show up at once ;o)
