2:35 AM | So what do folks do when you are unable to coordinate closing dates on the old and new homes?
The people buying my current home are insisting on possession at closing, and the people currently in our new home insist on staying two weeks after closing. It just complicates things in a major fashion. Even the closing itself is problematic- if we have to be out at closing, where are you supposed to keep your family members, pets, and possessions while you sign papers for an hour? Parked at the curb with the motors running (it's hot here!)?
Money is so much an issue here- I have remodeling to do in the new home and need to save every penny.
And the homes are 1200 miles apart. And I am traveling with one carload of pets, and another carload of an elderly handicapped Mother In Law. And even if we drive really slowly, it certainly won't take us two weeks to get there :) So even if we do manage to close both on the same day and take three days to get there that still leaves me with 10 days and nowhere to go.
As it stands I am looking at having to keep us all in a hotel for 10 days, as well as getting extra charges on the rental truck if we keep it longer than 5 days. This all ads up to major money and I am flummoxed.
We are hoping to at least be allowed to unload our truck into the new homes basement, but that still leaves people and pets to deal with. All seven of us could conceivably cram ourselves into my Mother's teensy home where she is already caring for a dying relative. It would be almost funny if it.... wasn't.
I know there isn't any easy answer. I just thought if you all told me your own horror stories mine wouldn't feel so bad :)
