I'm wondering how many of you have exhibited heirloom vegetables at your local county fair, and what kind of experiences you have had? (I realize county fair season is still far off in some places, but we just got our "premium book" in the mail a couple weeks ago and entries will be due in the next few weeks so it is on my mind).
I love county fairs and think it is important to support them by participating. It is also a good way, in principle, to show off heirlooms that are different and unusual (not the standard local hybrid variety from the greenhouse). On the other hand, some local fairs (mine included) may not be ready for the "old and unusual" at least based on the categories available for entry. For example, my choice for "hot" peppers are (a) long type, (b) round type, and (c) small type. (I can probably fit my peppers somewhere in those categories, but maybe you see what I mean).
Just curious about the experience of others in this regard as I watch the garden grow and think about county fair time.
