September 2, 2007 10:11 PM | Hi Terri and Karma,
I love this forum and both of ya'll!!! I haven't been on it much lately cause all my flowers have turned brown and black from the heat. It has been too hot to go out. First the rain, now the heat. I pulled up my Zinnias and put in some Chrysanthemums. It is cooling off A LITTLE BIT the last couple of days but still too hot to work outside... Even my Dahlias are bad. I have nothing. Maybe a rose or 2. I still didn't get to do my teacup...

September 3, 2007 3:13 PM | Good job we posted then or they might remove the forum if the lack of input carries on!
Hi Yardqueen, nice to hear from you again. It's a shame when the summer is nearly over, my garden is looking quite bare now. I had quite a good few months using my own flowers , now it's back to shop bought ones.
This forum isn't only cut flowers,it is floral design.........florists don't use garden flowers, they use shop flowers. |

September 4, 2007 10:05 AM | Would they really remove the forum? We better get back to it then. Terri and anyone else who care, wanna set a goal? Say, 200 posts this week? Let's talk flowers! |

September 10, 2007 10:08 PM | I'm just done reading this thread over again and....hahaha, such drama for our small group of 3. |
karmaplace New Orleans, LA Zone 8b
September 10, 2007 10:24 PM | Why don't we talk about exciting new things awaiting us? Like fall....beautiful foliage and jeweled tone flowers. Holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving, where we can display our pumpkin arrangements and table centerpieces with candles. And then there's Christmas. Show off our garlands and wreaths, staircases and fireplaces, and most definitely our lit TREES! I positively want to hang around here for this. In spite of all this drama, I know I will be here for a while...even if there's just me. Monologues are good for something. Anyway, anyone else here want to add to the list of exciting things to come? |

September 10, 2007 11:02 PM | Yardqueen, you had better not go anywhere, ok? Three's not a crowd 3 is a group of friends! we must stick together
in all this high drama,it is better than a soap! |
yardqueen1948 Emory, TX Zone 8a
September 10, 2007 11:42 PM | I don't know what the drama is about. I must have missed something. All I know is that I posted 3 times before either of you spoke to me. I felt a little ignored, sort of like I had somehow found myself in the middle of a private d-mail. And I have asked what this is about regarding the number of posts. I still don't know what that is about... |
terriculture london

September 10, 2007 11:59 PM | I do apologise Yardqueen for not speaking to you, this wasn't intentional. I can't speak for Karma, but I have put
so many posts here that have been totally ignored I guess I was feeling a bit fed up.
Regarding the posts, I was just highlighting the fact that they have gone way down and I don't really understand why.
When I joined the site about 6 weeks ago there were lots of people posting.
I don't know about the rules and I see some forums have only 15 or so! I doubt it will matter.
Anyway, can we just get on with flower arranging buisness now? will you show me your basket collection and I will show you mine!! once again sorry if you felt ignored.

I know you didn't mean to but it did feel sort of funny... sort of like I was invisible...LOL I don't know what time it is where you are, but here it is amost 11:30 pm and I have to work tomorrow so I can't post pics of baskets now...LOL I have to get them off shelves and walls or you can't really tell what they are... If I took a picture of them as a group it would look like a trash pile... lol And I wouldn't want to bore you with plain ordinary ones... only the "special" ones.... I am anxious to see yours also! |

September 11, 2007 5:46 AM | Oh no, I awoke to this! Carol, I had no idea...."The Drama" was me poking fun of Terri threatening to leave and we, as in you and I, were begging her to stay! I'm so sorry you felt ignored, it was not my intention. This thread was about increasing posts and participation and that can't be accomplished if we were purposely leaving you out. I'm glad terri was awake to send you a bouquet. I went to sleep without giving anything a second thought after my last post. Again, Carol, I'm sorry to hurt your feelings. I have to admit, though, this is more action than we have gotten since the get to know you thread!
Here are some flowers for you too Carol...sorry I had to reuse flowers.

You know it may take a while for people to notice this forum. I can't even remember how I came across it because I usually only visit forums on my favorites.
I wish brugs made good cut flowers....I have a lot of them right now! I have been posting them on the brug forum. They wilt as soon as cut though so they cannot be used as cut flowers.

September 11, 2007 10:45 AM | Wow, those brugs are pretty! The color change is amazing. I don't think I've ever seen them in person. They're probably only sold at specialty nurseries? Are they difficult to maintain? I also like the little dewdrops poking through at the base of your yellow brug. |

That is a lovely display of flowers Karma, like the folded leaf too! |
yardqueen1948 Emory, TX Zone 8a
September 11, 2007 4:47 PM | Karma,
I never thought about the 'golden dewdrops' LOL
Terri,
They are huge! And tropical. Not hardy at all below zone 8 or 9. People in Northern states grow them and they are grown in Germany and many other countries, but they are grown in big pots there and brought in for winter. They usually have to cut them back, so they don't get to be huge trees like they do in California or Florida, or in their native habitat...South America. I love the flowers!
Here is one that I think is pretty also Click the image for an enlarged view.

Shall we start a new thread for our basket collections?.
Do you have any ornamental grasses? Karma wants us to make an arrangement with some. I don't have much

September 14, 2007 4:09 AM | Hi You Three
Please don't go away. I drop in to this forum regularly & really enjoy it a lot. I'm a total techno- dummy & haven't been able to get any of my pics to post so haven't felt like I had anything to contribute. Now we've had a killing frost so most of my home-grown materials are limp & dead in the garden :o( . Guess it would've been more polite to @ least post a compliment from time-to-time rather than admire & leave. Sorry! But please believe that your contributions are being appreciated by @ least one person who's kinda shy about not being able to fully participate. Thanks & hang in there!

September 15, 2007 2:31 AM | Hi Karmaplace
Thanks for your warm response. Yes, the temp. early Thurs a.m. dropped to -1.3... let's see, that's about 29F & all the tender plants including tomatoes, zuchinni, E.S. hydrangea, basil, colocacia, etc. were whacked by the frost. Today it was 22 (that's 72F) so the weather is pretty unpredictable here. Only the plants in the east garden were frozen. The begonias on the west of the house were untouched.
During the winter 2 years ago we had 42 days of snow cover (& not much @ that!). This past winter saw us with 186 days of deep snow cover & boy did we have mold "issues" when it finally melted! July was hot, for here, but I suspect nothing like you folks in southern U.S. experience as "normal". This is part of what appeals to me about the opportunity to chat with you gardeners from other parts of the world-- we all have our challenges & disappointments but still keep faith that we'll do things differently 'next year' & so will the weather!
I marvel @ some of the incredibly exotic plants you folks in the warm zones grow & yet, when I see something in your floral designs that will grow here too I feel kinda 'connected' with you folks. Gosh, this sounds pretty sappy (but it's true! LOL).
I shall continue to investigate how to access my pics & may have to re-register from my email account rather than the gmail I primarily use. Thanks for the offer of support... I do appreciate it. In the meantime, I'll be popping in regularly & from now on will @ least say "hello". G'nite all.

September 15, 2007 5:47 AM | Thanks Donna for joining in. We definitely need the participation. It's really nice to have you here because most of time we get so excited about floral design that we don't discuss growing cut flowers. This year was my first year growing flowers to cut as well as growing them in general. Because I started late, I did not do it as seriously as I will next year. I have some hollyhocks started for next year and bought seeds including larkspur, statice, and oriental poppies, but don't know what to do with them yet. I know they will make wonderful cut flowers if I'm successful with growing them from seed.
I never thought about the mold issues that can arise due to melted snow. Probably because we never get snow, although we had a white christmas one year....the year right before the big hurricane flooded New Orleans. We think it was an omen...and will not wish for snow ever again....lol. Thanks for looking into uploading your pictures. I'm looking forward to seeing them. Well I'm off to work...have a great day! |

September 15, 2007 10:52 PM | Yardqueen, I "stole" a couple of canna seeds from my neighbor's yard. I read on the canna forum that it needs to be scored and soaked before planting. Have you ever done this or do you just thin them? I wanted to try planting her seeds to replace mine. I took a pic of a floret I borrowed from the plant to show you. Is this a common canna? You are not allowed to steal canna flowers karma, tut tut. naughty girl! |
yardqueen1948 Emory, TX Zone 8a
September 16, 2007 12:03 AM | Karma, I have only planted seeds once in a sixpack and they all came up. I used a small drill ( like they use in nail salons) which is how I was instructed by the lady who gave them to me. You only drill until you see white. You can also use a file or you can nick with a knife. whichever is easy for you... I think I soaked them over night. They say if you don't do the drilling/ filing thing it can take 5 years to germinate! I think your canna may be this one:

September 16, 2007 3:38 PM | Terri, dmail me your address and I'll send you some. I'll put on my ninja outfit tonight and collect more seeds. If I don't get caught, you may receive more than a couple in the mail.....that makes you an accomplice! I've never sent seeds before, do I just throw it in an envelope and send it off or is it more involved?
These ARE seeds, YQ? Click the image for an enlarged view.

yardqueen1948 Emory, TX Zone 8a
September 16, 2007 8:41 PM | The black thing is the seed. There should be 2 or three in each brown thing. I can send you some seeds also but I don't know which cultivar they are... When you mail seed you need to use a bubble envelope. These seeds are large and would be crushed by equipment the PO uses. You can have it "Hand Cancelled" or marked fragile. Ask your PO for their suggestion. |

September 16, 2007 8:44 PM | Terri,
I may take some basket pics in a few minutes, I am in the mood.... but I dont think I will take them down as it will require climbing. I will just try to zoom in. I will also try to count some of them. |

September 16, 2007 9:10 PM | Thanks YQ. I may take you up on the seed offer. Let me try these first to see if I'm even competent. |

September 16, 2007 9:46 PM | My battery in my camera ran down. I am charging it now. I was almost finished with what I can take. I forgot to count any of them.... I am too tired. As I said most of them I just zoomed in. there are a couple or so shots I took baskets off the shelf that were within reach. I am tired now. Not form the baskets. from mowing. September 16, 2007 11:02 PM | A belated Thank You, Terri, for your warm welcome.
Lana, my complaining about snow & mold & frost, etc. was pretty insensitive of me... YOU truly know how "nature's wrath unleashed" feels. Here on the Canadian prairies we are unaccustomed to experiencing devastating weather & my heart goes out to all of you folks whose lives are changed by such horrific events.
It sounds like you've done wonderfully well with your first year of gardening & I applaud the interesting seed choices that you've made. German statice & sea lavender are 2 perennials that we can grow here which both have delicate, ethereal flowers-- great for arrangements &/or drying.
I have just about had a meltdown trying (& failing) to post pictures... turns out there really IS something wrong with our computer & it's not all my ineptitude. Am going to do up a little arrangement with sweet peas, sea lavender & whatever else I can find. I'll take a picture & then if the "ol' Dell" & I can ever come to an amicable agreement about NOT playing hide'n'seek with the pics, will post it.
I love doing little arrangements in cream & sugar sets. I have a few little pieces from both of my late grannies & it's so nice to have a mini bouquet perched on the window sill above the sink. C'mon folks! tell me you can see it all now... ;o)
It never occurred to me that you could grown a canna from seed! Here, I believe people buy either the bulb or "started" plant because of our shorter growing season & of course, the bulb must be lifted in the fall.
Hope all of you have had a lovely weekend. Bye for now.
