October 6, 2007 3:58 PM | My laundry room had, over the last 25 years become a utility "catch all" room. I had a washer and dryer side by side and an uprite freezer on the side of them. My upright freezer had died long ago, so it was just taking up space. The shelves above were filled with laundry products, paint tools(brushes, pans, etc.),cookbooks, phone books and anything else we did'nt want to find a place for. And on the floor, shoes, shoes, shoes. Well, the inevitable happened. My washer finally quit working and my dryer was so old it was sucking all of the fibers out of my towels. So, thank God it was around income tax return time so I was able to go to Lowe's and find a stackable washer and dryer for a decent price. I could have just stuck it in the room and continued my most dreaded task as usual. Instead I got my son to take all of the old appliances out to the backyard. Lowes picked them up for me when they delivered my new stackables. Next I got a very large box of very large garbage bags and began my exorcism of junk. You would be surprised. As they say, if you haven't used it in months, either give it away or throw it away. I bought a gallon of paint. Wiped down all the walls and shelves. Painted the walls green. Later came back and handpainted a few leaves on the front of the shelves. The white table that I now use to fold clothes on was in another part of the house (in the way). Now it had a place. I bought three baskets. One for bottles of cleaning products. One for clothes hangers. One for pants hangers. I actually wanted to get 6 baskets, but it made it look too cluttered. I purchased the little boxes with the pretty floral scenes on them. Two I used just for show. The third one I use to put my dryer sheets in on the table. The little shelf was in my closet and so I just hung it up and added a FEW small items to dress it up. I was tired of picking up those heavy bottles of detergent and softner, so I took one of the boxes off the top shelf(I left the lid on the shelf-same effect), and I placed it on top of my table at an angle. I went to walmart and puchased 3 wide mouth jars in housewares. Went to the kitchen aisle and found the commercial size containers of ketchup, etc. and found the pumps that are sold seperately (on the same aisle) that are supposed to be used for consession stands I quess. The pumps fit the wide mouth jars I found in housewares perfectly. Soooooo, I took my pretty box, my 3 wide mouth jars, my three pumps and a few flowers I had around the house. One jar holds my detergent, one my softner, one my liquid bleach for colored clothes. I empty the liquids into their containers, keep the lids and pump what I need when I need it. Because I love the look of my new laundry room, I immediately fold and put away my cloths now cause I don't want to clutter my table. I also purchased a 3 section laundry cart (in the corner) and labeled each section "white" "colored" "Delicate". My 30 year old son,and my 9 year old grandson live with me and my husband of 36 years. So I have 3 guys here and believe it or not, they actually put the dirties were they go. (Better than hearing Mom fuss about them messing up her "New Room". I actually enjoy doing our laundry now. And amazingly I have'nt missed anything I threw or gave away. "Keep it simple". Click the image for an enlarged view.
