I've been using Amway powdered dishwasher detergent for several years. It is good, but also very expensive, so I would like to use something different that is more economical and will still be environmentally safe. Can anybody help?

I don't know if you have Trader Joe's near you, but a year or two ago in Consumer Reports they rated their powdered dish detergent highly, and I think all the cleaning products they sell there are environmentally friendly. I've used it and liked it fine, I've never used Amway though so I can't compare those two, but I felt it worked just as well as Cascade did.

Thanks, but we don't have Trader Joe's. There has to be some store brand, since everything gets copied eventually. I live in a pretty remote area, not many stores, so my selections are quite limited.

Pretty much all of Trader Joe's stuff exists as some other brand too--the manufacturers just make a special version for TJ's and put the TJ's brand on it. Sometimes it's easy to figure out what the other brand is and sometimes it's not, if I ever figure out who makes their dishwasher detergent I'll let you know.

You could also look for Seventh Generation or Ecover, they both make environmentally friendly products too. I've never tried either one so I have no idea how much they cost or how well they work, but I imagine they're probably cheaper than Amway. I'm pretty sure I've seen some Seventh Generation stuff at Target and local grocery stores here, but if you can't find them locally, you can probably get them mail order.

I had forgotten about Shacklee. And I will take some time to read labels when I get back to a store. When I asked at one store if they had anything that was environmentally friendly all I got was a blank stare and "uh, we don't have anything like that".
