February 15, 2008 11:56 AM | Doe's anyone go to a flower club or floral demonstrations?
I am member of a floral art group,we meet once a month. We watch a national floral demonstrator who makes usually six arrangements, have a coffee, exchange ideas, buy floristry products at a stall and offer our competition arrangements to the judge!
Each week, we meet on Dave's to create a different themed arrangement as well, which are chosen by whomever is playing. This is all for fun, so please join in if you can and get crazy creative!!

February 17, 2008 11:47 PM | Hello to all the group - I've just spent about an hour reviewing all that I've missed here since last fall!
Guess I got distracted with other gardening chores and am certainly currently out of plants in the FROZEN garden. Sorrry if that was shouted too loudly but winter does begin to wear upon one's nerves.
All of you have been busy with Zen and fireworks displays - very nice all:)
So what sort of new arrangement do you have in mind - for March, is it?
Dunno how to work with frozen plants tho - could you make that a new category ;) ?
I'll check back soon for a real category - nice to see newcomer from down under -wonder if we are up over to her???

February 18, 2008 5:39 PM | Thanks for the kind welcome, sure you have seen me around before as I have been around DG for a long time. Would dried arrangements count as I do have a nice swag I made from flowers from arrangements gone dry? Would that be a category?
Guess for now I will lurk as it will be a bit before anything blooms here although I could use some grasses when cut in March. I always cut back my grasses on 3/5 unless we are in a real snow squall.
But I do love a challenge so I'll just wait for the lesson and the plan and see if I can go from there.

February 19, 2008 9:57 AM | Good morning All,
I woke up this morning and was in the mood to create. So here is my tropical oasis. It's very silly. I put silk flowers ,that I bought at the 99 cent store, and used floral adhesive tape to place them on my plant. I don't know the name of this plant,we call it a snake plant.
The plant is on a brass tray with pineapples engraved in it with a bamboo trim. My bearded dragon ,Dragon, was curious as to what I doing so I put him in the picture. He's from the Australian dessert. Click the image for an enlarged view.
|
diggerette Brooklyn, NY Zone 7a
February 19, 2008 10:05 AM | Then I wanted to give it more of an oasis feel. But I don't have any large empty spaces in my house so I place it against a larger wall space but by that time Dragon was annoyed so I took him off the tray.
I'm going to keepi the flowers on the plant for a while. Do you think it will hurt the plant? Click the image for an enlarged view.

February 19, 2008 10:30 AM | Hi Adele,
Remember we said have fun? Looks like you had fun creating your tropical oasis, not silly at all.
I'd say it's an inspiration to anyone who says it's snowing outside and they don't have any flowers!!!
I know that plant as mother in laws tongue! don't know the latin name but I'm sure Sue does. The flowers won't hurt it a bit, they are as tough as old boots.
Good idea to use the silk flowers like that, if you hadn't said, I would think they were real.
Dragon! wow, you never know what you're going to see next! he is a very excitng addition to your arrangemet.
Thankyou for the two pictures, it really helps to see the arrangement properly.
Well done, a lovely tropical oasis achieved! Thankyou for bringing it in. |

February 19, 2008 10:48 AM | Thank you Terri, Your words are always encouraging. I did have fun designing the tropical oasis.
Mother in law tongue plant LOL- what a great name for the plant. It's like saying-The plant is here and it isn't going anywhere-get use to it!

I love Dragon, I wonder if I can get one here. Did you get him from a pet shop? Did you have to have a liscence and what are his special requirements?
I haven't done an arrangement tonight, but I will when i get a bit more time and can have a good go at it!

I do grow the pineapples from the tops. I have been growing them, harvesting for years. I started them to put on our Isle of Dreams with other tropicals. |

February 20, 2008 9:05 AM | Sue, Beautiful flowers, beautiful design and such interesting foliage! I wish I could smell it. You are so lucky to have these amazing plants growing in your garden. What is the name of the red leaves? Also, I'm sure you could get a bearded dragon in a pet store. They're from central Australia ,so hopefully, they won't be too expensive.
Haighr, How do you grow pineapples? That sounds like a fun project. What does your Isle of Dreams look like? It sounds surreal.
|
haighr Hagerstown, MD Zone 6a
February 20, 2008 9:37 AM | I cut off the top of the pineapple and peel off the rind and bottom leaves until I have about 1 1/2" of stalk. I let it dry for a few days and then just stick it in a mix of potting soil and orchid mix (the mix aerates the soil). After about 1-2 weeks if you tug on the top lightly and it doesn't pull out of the soil mix, it is rooted and you are on your way. It should produce fruit in about 2 years.
Steve and I love the islands so decided to create one in our own backyard, it is complete with majestic palms, treasure chest, lobster pot and even an anchor that I won from a lady in Australia on ebay. Here is a photo from last year.
Needless to say we get some bizarre ideas!

February 20, 2008 10:27 AM | Thank you. I overwintered the palms one year, but it was such a hassle of insulating and burlaping and mulching that I have since pulled them up and keep them in pots to take in and out. The pineapples are a lot of fun to watch grow, slow growth but very low maintenance. Just be careful not to poke an eye out LOL as they do have sharp points and get to be quite large as you can see in the photo.
Now, back to the bromeliads, I had one and it only survived for one season. I guess I need to learn a bit more about them because they are really lovely plants. |
diggerette Brooklyn, NY Zone 7a
February 20, 2008 4:19 PM | Candee, I bought a pineapple. I'm going to make chicken and pineapple tonight, My family thanks you. And I'll have a go at it. I'll let you know if it takes root.

February 20, 2008 7:32 PM | Hey ya'll,
I've been lurking, but haven't had much time to post. Where to start.
First, I am going to try to use first names. If I get it wrong please excuse me, as I am horrible at names.
Candee, I love your design and the pineapple plant is perfect for Teensy and I to try. Your back yard is FANTASTIC!! I love the bizarre. Different is something I strive for. I love Eastern design, including Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Indonesia, etc. I also love shabby chic and Russian design. Throw in my love of Catholic art (old and eclectic) and you would be very surprised at my decorating. If someone walked into my house they would think I was an Asian Catholic. Actually I am Southern girl who is non-denominational. LOL.
Sue, could you figure out a way to ship that to Alabama please? When are they going to come up with smellovision? That is gorgeous, but the thought of cutting off an Allamanda flower makes me cringe. If I had one, I know it would stay on the plant forever, even brown. Do you detect zone envy?
Well....um.....a week late, but I finally got my VALENTINES arrangement done. I have the flowers for the tropical oasis, but figured since these have been in the fridge for over a week, they best be used first.

This flower club is very lively and exciting tonight, fabulous. Thankyou all for joining in.
Sue, your arrangement is so striking and colouful, absotutely tropical! really nice idea to use the wooden log for the 'oasis'.The blue background really sets off the flowers beautifully.
Candee, Wow! So your second picture is your real 'TROPICAL OASIS' . That is so fantastic, we have a land artist at our flower club. I love it. Thinking 'outside the box' is very welcome here!
Traci, Your BUD vase is lovely!
Elegance, beauty, grace, movement, line, form, texture, colour, absolutely beautifull. Perfect and gorgeous!
Thankyou.

February 21, 2008 8:34 AM | I'd like to thank all of you for such a warm welcome. Thank you for your generous compliments.
LOL, pupil, would love to see your artistic creations, sounds like a home I could fall in love with. I just love the unique. I am sure Teensy will love the pineapple adventure, I have a friend at work who started two with his children. Just be careful of poking out an eye and I am being serious. When I have moved mine from in to out and visa versa I have had a few "prickly" encounters.
Now for those tulips. The colors are so bold, they really magnify the glass. I have always like the addition of something off to the side, must be that "bizarre" in me, but I believe it makes an arrangement pull your eye away and then back which enhances the pleasure of looking in the first place.
Can't wait to see more, bring them on,
Candee |

February 21, 2008 5:29 PM | Thanks everyone! I have to say, this was the easiest one and my favorite to date. It really helps to have the right tools. The frog pin thingy made it sooo much easier. When I did my first, I was holding it together with tape and paper towels. lol.
The little ones are actually napkin holders with a spot for flowers. I had two left over and thought, hmmm. I had more trouble with those stupid leaves then the whole thing.
Candee, I like the little additions as well. It is something I picked up from Terri, as she usually has leaves or flowers off to the side or out of the arrangement. Stole her idea. As for my house, I would love to share pics, but since I am in the middle of the divorce, I have been taking things down and packing them up for ease. When I get to where ever I am going, I will definitely show you some of my crazy stuff, when ever that will be? DH, not, called it junk. Funny thing, he is now wanting some of it. That will be the day. HAHA
Now, hoping it won't take me two weeks to do the tropical :^) |

February 23, 2008 6:10 PM | Hi everyone! Looks like a happening club in here. Thanks for all the tropical oasis(es?). Sorry I haven't found time to do mine. But I will leave you an old beach arrangement I made last summer.
Dig, love what you did with the mother in law's tongue. Your dragon was a nice touch.
Haighr, I have two pineapple tops in a pot as well. I hope they'll look as cool as yours one day. Your backyard island looks like a tropical oasis.
Traci, you are really up to date with floral design. Tulips inside a vase are the thing these days. Your tulip placement looks perfect. Love the setup too. Looks like a couple of groupies. You put a lot of detail into your arrangements. Great job. . .are you sure you're new at this??
Sue, your arrangement is truly tropical with the bright colors. You've used all tropical flowers and foliage as well. Awesome.
Terri, what can I say. . .you did it again. That is sooooo creative. You did an EXCELLENT job using traditional flowers. That is the hardest thing to do. . .creating a tropical feel using everyday traditional flowers. I am in absolute awe. . .with the whole set up. The colors remind me of the floral profusion that won 1st place in Chelsea. You've changed my mind about that color combination. It rocks!

March 1, 2008 9:22 AM | Good Morning All,
Haighr, Fantastic design! It has lot of movement, great form and the squirrels are adorable.
Here's mine. It measures 5 inches from the tip of the shell to the tip of the seeded eucalyptus leaf on top. I don't know the name of the other two flowers. It's sticking to the wall with floral adhesive.

March 1, 2008 3:00 PM | Hi Candee, very clever idea to use a miniature bottle, like it!
The display with your teapot shows that it is a miniature bottle. A bottle of Vodka is much taller than a teapot.!! no disqualification!! The catkins and lenten rose are a lovely combination too. Thanks for taking part.
Hi Adele, I don't think there is a way to delete photos.
I love the idea of using a shell for a container and sticking it too the wall, Great!
Looking forward to more pictures..

March 1, 2008 9:54 PM | Hi Star, Welcome back!
Your miniature daffs are beautiful, looks so nice with the tiny purple Dianthus.

March 1, 2008 10:51 PM | Here's my second picture. It stayed up on the wall for about 20 minutes.
I've been working on a 18 inch grapevine wreath for about 2 hours today using seeded eucalyptus and little purple flowers. It's on a hook on a wall and I must have pulled a bit too hard and the wreath fell and almost everything got smashed or came out of the wreath. Oh well, back to the old drawing board.
Nice job , Star. Pretty flowers. I love purple and white together.

I like the little collar of yellow flowers, really sets off the purple, complementary coloured flowers!!!
Thanks for joining in this week at such short notice.
Sorry to hear about the unfortunate outcome of your wreath! If you wired everything, that wouldn't happen!

March 2, 2008 3:06 AM | Helllllooooo!!! Nope, not up and running. I am just borrowing a air card from a friend. Well, I did my mini. I am not crazy about it, but as I love to do these, I will probably attempt again.
It is in a shot glass. I used tete' a tete' daffodils, miniture roses, crocus, new leave from unknown Walmart plant that look like Elephant ears and maiden hair fern? I think it is that fern.

Traci, I think you've done a wonderful job with both of them. They're very pretty and I like the leaf wrapped around the inside of the vase. It's an interesting detail. |

March 2, 2008 3:33 PM | Hi Traci, wow, Rock on! it's like waiting ages for a bus to arrive, then two coming along at the same time!
Your mini is cute in the shot glass, good use of foliage! Lovely mini bouquet of spring flowers.
Sorry! I thought you knew that about removing the stamen on the lilies. I like them on personally!
but, floristry rules say they should go, especially for wedding work!
If they were condtioned properly and not kept close together, they wouldn't mess up!!!
Really like your 'Tropical oasis' the leaves are a great idea for the oasis of water, and the lilies add the exotic
tropical feel. Beautiful ,elegant and very modern! Thankyou for your arrangements, I'm surprised you managed to
'make' them and get them posted today. Hope you get back online soon.
Adele, everything should be wired for a wreath if you intend to hang it up. Good Luck! takes ages!!!!
Hi Candee! We have friends visiting at the moment, I'll bring mine in later.

March 2, 2008 4:13 PM | Hey all. Thanks! I did like the way the lilies turned out, but not keen still on the mini. I must work on that more.
LOL, Terri. I made those last week and loaded on my computer. I am borrowing a friend's wireless card, which he is about to come get, and was able to post them from my computer. BELIEVE ME, there was NO arranging, much less walking today.
I discovered a new world the other day, that I am thrilled about! The Library! Duh. I never thought to go check out books and magazines. One had some fantastic leaf manipulation and I am going to experiment with it.
Here's a little tip. If the leaf is stiff and "not bendy", rub vegatable oil on it. It softens it up plus gives them a nice shine. Terribly messy though, or it may be just me. LOL.
Also, I want to find steel grass. The book stated it works very much like bear grass, but is stronger (and can cut you).

March 6, 2008 1:05 PM | Thanks Candee, I had to buy the tulips obviously! They were the only spring flowers at the supermarket.
The demonstrator at the club last night was very traditional, but she made a comment that she liked my modern one because it looked like a basket of eggs, so well spotted!!
There were quite a few arrangements with forsythia and one with Hyacinth and pussy willow which was lovely.
There was a birds nest made with Hebe and bear grass, yellow tulips, red gerbera and double daffs .
I bought a few bits and pieces at the stall. A couple of varigated wallflower plants, some oasis, green tintin,a couple of vases, a wire collar, and some moss.
You won't believe next months theme! Why did I use tulips for my spring fever, wish I hadn't now!!

such is life!

As for me, had to improvise, read an idea somewhere to spray paint the cut alum when died off and use as accent other places in the garden, which I have done. So used the same technique with some of my last season and needed cut back Autumn Joy Sedum and some other died back weed to create this basket of "spring joy".

March 6, 2008 11:29 PM | Hey all,
I have had time to ohh and ahhh over everyone's arrangements. Let's us see.....
Terri, maaaavalous! It is so delicate and the CD was a great idea.
Sue, the flowers can be bigger, just not the container. I love the colors and how they POP! You did fantastic!
Candee, that is ingenious! You should be proud of yourself. Give yourself a pat on the back. I love it and think it is inspired!! I have to add, this is after all was written, I keep scrolling past your posts and LOVE it. I may have to steal that idea.
Star, I love it and I would like to know HOW you have this growing in your yard. NOT FAIR!!
Finally, the winner of the mini's (no, we don't have winners and it is not a competition, but I love this one myself) is Adele. It is perfect in size, shape, dimension, color, scale, texture, well, ran out of words. But anyway, it is great!!
Terri, you and tulips go hand in hand so you are the perfect woman for the job. It does look like an easter basket. Your leaf manipulation alone will win the competition. I bet the other arrangers are jealous. LOL

I loved that shell idea Adele it is so unique. Am thinking that I will take one of mine and glue a magnet on the back and use on my fridge door with occasional little sprigs and use one of those little water testtube thigamagigs for the little vase part.
Traci, I would be greatly flattered to have you use one of my ideas. I get some good ones, but am not nearly talented enough to bring them to fruition as I have seen you do.
Might I add this is such a great forum! What would you think of a new thread for each individual weekly theme? |

March 9, 2008 3:10 AM | Am I a week behind or have I still got time to do spring, Terri? I feel so busy! I've become quite obsessed with Bromeliads and have been finding bargains everywhere and I conceded with my husband that I have a problem. (but my garden looks nice!) LOL |
terriculture london
(UK)
March 9, 2008 10:28 AM | Hi Sue, sounds like you have been so busy.... slow down, it's not too late to do your arrangement!!
Your place must be looking beautiful with all your new Bromeliads.
If we have a thread for each theme like Candee suggested, then it would be easier to join in whenever you want to.
What does everyone think? |
pupilpropogtr Birmingham, AL Zone 7b
March 9, 2008 12:28 PM | I think it would be great. Then you could label the thread what the theme is. If you get behind...um....like I do ALL the time, then you could find the arrangement you are finished with and post it to that thread.
It would need to have a common link. Something like "Themed Arrangements-Tropical Oasis", "Themed Arrangements-Minitures". If you left off the Weekly, which I almost put, then people would not feel like they missed out on that week. Just add it when you get it made. Does that make sense? If I just finished my tropical, I could then find that thread and post.
How does that sound? AND I nominate Candee to do the first thread and pick out the theme, unless you don't want to since you had to pick last time. No pressure from here, just trying to throw out ideas. Whoever's week it is, they can start the new thread. Am I making this to complicated?
Candee, what do you think? It was your brainchild, so you get to come up with the details. LOL.
This is the first arrangement in an attempt to do a larger scale display for 'spring fever'. I just finished it and will have to add the rest later, as I have to run to work.

March 9, 2008 8:55 PM | Ok, all together now. A couple of things I would have changed. First, I would have made sure the forsynthia was more pliable. The limb did not bend how I wanted. Second, I would have spread it out more. I was trying to keep it on the bamboo and once I got it there, that sucker wasn't about to be moved again. Finally, I would have put the yellow and pink arrangement in the middle.
All in all, it is ok, but I want to work a lot more on tying the arrangements together in different vases.

March 9, 2008 9:16 PM | Oh LA LA! C'est Magnifique!
A treat before bedtime for me! Thanks Traci, it's a wonderful spring display, so inventive.
Love the arch with the Forsythia, really helps to 'connect' all the vase displays.
A tip about manipulating stems.. bend and tie them, leave to soak in a bucket completely submerged for a couple of days , they become much more flexible.
Your arrangements are great!
|
pupilpropogtr Birmingham, AL Zone 7b
March 9, 2008 10:04 PM | Thanks Terri. I wondered if I could do that or just use a younger stem, but most of those are not long enough.

March 9, 2008 11:11 PM | I do like it, it's a fun display. maybe I like fru fru!! tweek if you wish .......... WARNING.. tampering with arrangements can cause stress!!!
Suggestions...
1. As daffodils shouldn't really share the same water as other flowers, place a vase of daffs either side of your pink and white flowers, making them the focal point, as the centrepiece.
2. Tie your raffia into one long piece and pleat it or twist it together and loop around all vases bringing them together visually. or
3.make all three vase arrangements with the same flowers in each, which will tie them together.
Karma does tweeks better! my suggestions are makeovers, sorry!!!!!!!!!!!

March 11, 2008 10:39 AM | No, Terri, those are good Tweeks. Using the same materials I have, but looking at it different. A makeover would have been, "Pick out different flowers, vases, and completely redisign". LOL.

"See, the same idea, but since the daff's will not go well with the other flowers, you obtain continuity by putting all flowers that are the same in one vase." Student says, "Wow, Ms. Terriculture, thanks. I was on the right path, but just needed an expert eye and ideas. Your my favorite teacher." Leaves apple and lots of fresh flowers on desk. Perfecto!

April 3, 2008 6:53 AM | I had a good time at the flower club last night. The demonstrator was quite good and I won one of her arrangements in the raffle!
It was something she made with sticks, roses, carnations and pink oasis.

April 3, 2008 7:07 AM | The colours didn't really show well on the pictures.
This one was two containers covered in cloth with coloured wire around them. An all green arrangement with Orchids and green carnations. Click the image for an enlarged view.

April 3, 2008 7:13 AM | The demonstrator seemed to make everything in pairs, bringing the second one out from behind the curtains!
Here's some of the competition arrangements. Click the image for an enlarged view.

April 5, 2008 5:59 AM | Sorry Terri, but I think your arrangements and the arrangements of most of our coffee conisuers are much more vibrant and exciting than those! We would have won stacks of awards hey? Not that there is anything wrong with them, just a bit ho hum, after all the wonderfull treats we get here.
No tulips for me i'm afraid. i searched high and low, with Hubby in tow, in cheap shops on card stocks and even in the grocery shop. I did find one pot full , but it was a poor pitifull sight! Out of season and still too warm, and definitely not the right climate. I will have to pass on the tulips, but promise to join the next one if its not tied to a particular flower type.
I am looking forward to the arrangments of others though, and espedially yours "Oh wonderful inspirator you are" and am enjoying the release from the pressure to perform! LOL |

April 5, 2008 9:35 AM | Hi Sue, I agree with you! Why do you think I hang out with all my mates here on cut flowers? they are much more creative and inspirational than anyone at the flower club. Most of the ladies that go there have been 'arranging' for 20 years or more! They churn out the same old designs for years.
The arrangements I showed you that the demonstrator made were her best ones, believe me there were ones that were bad! and I don't normally say that about anyones arrangements, I'm always looking for something positive to say.
The thing is, this arranger has been in major flower shows at Chelsea and Hampton Court., but so boring!!!!!!
Yeah, the Tulip theme, I don't like it when the theme is so specific, but then again,I don't chose the themes at the club!!
Next month is another stupid theme, 'Derby Day'
Someone will start a new theme for next week hopefully!
This is the worse arrangement I saw at the flower club, oasis showing!!!!!!

April 5, 2008 9:50 AM | Oh Candee, It was nice to win a raffle arrangement, the carnations are huge, I'm going to take it apart and make something else with them. Tulips seem to be a problem for everyone! we need another theme ...hint hint!! |
