| ardesia Saint Helena Island, SC March 27, 2008 | We are opening up a sun room to the rest of the house and adding on to the adjoining kitchen dining area. We need to keep several support poles and because of the differences in ceiling elevations I find myself having to decide how to approach these transition areas of the ceiling. This is the space in question. Heart pine to match the existing floor will be laid in the entire area. |
| ardesia Saint Helena Island, SC March 27, 2008 | Oops, hit the wrong button. The existing ceiling to the right and bottom part of the picture is the popcorn textured stuff. There is also a small portion right in the center of the picture where the popcorn ends and the smooth surface started. Just ending it that way always looked so dumb. The contractors want to put some type of low divider around the original sun porch (near left) and they also want to put a small piece of molding or something along that little smooth/popcorn line. Any ideas?

| ardesia Saint Helena Island, SC March 27, 2008 | One of their ideas was arches; this is a temp on they put up so I could see what they might look like. This group is known for building beautiful arches. Do you think it would be too busy if they put arches all around? Would it visually close in the room? The ceiling elevation changes on the far side of this arch. It had to match the existing kitchen ceiling which was a tray ceiling.

| trackinsand Umatilla, FL Zone 9a March 28, 2008 | i think that since the elevation changes anyway that an arch dividing the two would be neat. i'm loving your additon and i love arches too, but maybe just the one would be enough. i can't tell from the pictures exactly what your style is but what about something completely different on the ceiling? like those punched tin squares like they had years ago? they make them new now and are really cool looking. you don't have to go with a metal look. i've seen them painted. just a thought. that doesn't solve the problem of what to do where the two meet though, does it? we need more pictures. |
| ardesia Saint Helena Island, SC March 29, 2008 | We had to make some quick decisions, the drywall guys are here. We decided on arches on both short ends of the old sun room and on the long stretch we will use a simple boxed beam with a short section where the two different ceiling textures meet. It was that little 4' section that comfused things so much; I couldn't figure out how to tie it in to another arch. I'll send more photos when the dust settles today. Style? Debi, consided who you are talking to here. LOL I am not exactly a stylin' gal. |
