| It appears to be a blue lava lamp! You're in luck, all you have to do is plug it in and change the light bulb every year or so! /endsarcasm |

| Skyla: Your plant is Dracaena, commonly sold as "Lucky Bamboo" though it isn't really bamboo.
Here's the link to Plant Files with care and culture information: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/38172/
More information: http://www.flowershopnetwork.com/blog/flower-plant-care/plan...

I have a couple of these that have been growing in vases of water for about 5 years. |

| I think from reading one of Sklya's threads on another forum that she was looking for the ID of the other plant in the picture--any ideas on that one? |

| Gee ... I just looked at the leaves and thought they were all Dracaena. Now that I see the stems on the plant in front, it looks like some kind of immature palm seedlings. |

| Thanks for your input guys :) I really appreciate it. Thanks for the links on my 'lucky bamboo', its always good to read up on how to care for your plants properly :) When i posted this in the ID forum i was told by a few people it was an immature palm but i got this about 3yrs ago from a supermarket so its not that immature really but im not sure how old a plant is before it stops being immature. Its just the leaves that confuse me as palms tend to have like 6leaves per stem and mine only has 2! Arr frustrating! lol,do you think im doing anything wrong and thats why its not growing leaves?

| Oh god I know the name but for the life of me I can't think what it is; it's a really common plant in the garden centres here. I love it; but they grow absolutely huge so I've never bought one. |

| Skyla, I don't know if your plant is actually an Areca Palm ... a lot of immature/young palms can look like that, but here in the U.S. the Areca is often sold at many garden centers as an indoor house plant, so that may very well be what you have.
Here in Florida, in the southern part of the state, the Areca Palm is grown as a landscape plant. Many people consider this palm a pest plant because they tend to multiply and take over the garden! I had a couple of Areca's growing in containers many years ago but they got huge and even with the year round humidity we have here, the fronds still would get ratty looking and brown on the tips. You can mist this plant as much as possible to provide the extra humidity which it loves, or try sitting it on a tray of pebbles and keep an inch or so of water in the tray at all times.
I remember visiting my sister and brother in law about 15 years ago and he was cutting a row of them down and digging them out to throw away. They were a thick hedgerow, about 12' tall across the entire back of their property, completely blocking the view of a lovely canal.
I found two Areca's listed in Plant Files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/38367/
and here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/66206/
They do get to be 15' or more in height, so you can eventually divide and transplant your little ones to larger containers.
Here are a couple more links with information for the care of Areca's grown as indoor plants: http://www.evergrowing.com/tips/arecapalm.htm

| Thanks so much for all your help, ive checked out those links and they are pretty useful, the care i have been giving my plant is pretty much the care the websites say i should be giving so thats good. I always wondered what the little brown things were that appeared on the top of the soil and turns out they were seeds! how amazing is that, ive just repotted my plant today so it should hopefully grow a bit faster even though according to a website they are very slow growers! Thanks again for your help im so glad i have a clearer idea of what to do, im pretty sure it is areca looking at the first photo you put up, i think it just needs to grow a little more than it will become alot clearer as to what it is :) |

| Yes...I also think it is what is commonly called an Areca palm...although its scientific name these days is Dypsis lutescens. Your plant is actually a group of young palms...the usual way they grow them...about 20 seeds in a pot so you have a nice full clumping palm look. Unfortunately they do not do so well inside...they like a lot of sun. Aloha |

| The garden centres sell a lot of plants which look similar in the range you have skyla_smith. Next time I go to the garden centre I'll check out the name as I still don't remember it. |

| Dave's Garden is the best place on the web! It's worth an annual subscription to be able to access many more forums that are for paid subscribers only! I have learned so much about so many different plants and made some nice acquaintances since buying a subscription. Everyone should try it out ... you don't have to pay for a year at first, there are trial subscriptions of a couple months or so, to see if it's something you want to continue. Believe me ... it is well worth it! There are so many different forums ... I've been a subscriber for almost 3 years and still haven't had time to go through them all. There are regional forums also (Canadian Gardening, Australian Gardening, European Gardening, Tropical Gardening, as well as one for every plant imaginable!) Most are only for paid subscribers but so much fun, even when you don't live in that area of the world. It's fun to see what other's grow in their parts of the world and fun to chat with so many.

| I looked in the garden centre at the weekend and your plant is either...an areca palm or a chamaedora elegans. I couldn't remember which one you had when I was looking haha. |

| Thats what we thought it was after plantladylin poster a photo that looked very very similar to my plant, Thanks so much for everyones help, its good to know the names of all the plants you have so you can give them the best possible care. The only thing i do differently to my areca plant is put it in the bathroom when anyone goes for a shower/bath! so that way it gets the humidity, and i give it a misting sometimes which i never did in the past (i mist most of my plants know after joining D.G, never realised it helped them before joining D.G!) I ABSOLUTELY love D.G ive posted questions on other forums but people dont tend to reply much or its ages before you just get one reply, and they arnt as helpful and nice as the poeple here! Everyone is soo soo helpful and go out of their way to give you the best possible answer. its amazing, and its also nice to help other people with their plant problems :) Thanks dipsydoodle :) |
