I thought we had a compost forum, but I didn't see one. I'm sure there's more than a few composters in the organic gardening forum!
Two of my bins aren't heating up anymore. They're 3' x 3' x 2' (high). They maxed out at 110°, then declined to the ambient air temp. This was over the course of about a month or a month and a half. They're in a sunny spot with plenty of ventilation. I stir and water a few times a week. So, you'd think maybe I'm finished. The compost doesn't look or smell finished. There's chunks of things looking like straw (probably that old clematis vine I threw in there). I thought they were supposed to continue to cook at around 90° for a while longer, so I thought maybe I was low in nitrogen. I went out and bought blood meal and split the package and poured half into each bin. Stirred and watered. Didn't heat even a little. Stayed at 75°
What am I missing out on here?
Thanks!
