We ordered compost from a usually satisfactory source this year and spread it on all our beds, digging in some where a vegetable garden extension was double dug since it had had grass, than sunflowers. This spring we have had almost daily rain, sometimes flooding everything in a short while, other times just light daily showers. All plants including Xeric ones are flourishing. But what's this?! In every bed except where the compost was buried we have myriads of the same little seedlings coming up! Oh, woe! We haven't been able to ID them yet, but the second leaves are shiny bright green pointed ovals. The only thing we can imagine about them is they must have come from some plant overhanging the compost area that seeded before the compost was left out for the winter. The only good thing is with the ground so soaked it's easy to pull them, but takes a lot of time and backache. Our soil is too heavy to work when wet, so hoeing or swoeing is out. Never thought I'd regret using compost everywhere! Of course never expected Denver to have showers or storms every day, either. Is there any NO rain dance?
