If anyone has good ideas for landscaping these two small gardens (approx 11 ft X 6-7 ft) shown in the pictures below I would appreciate any advice I can get. The arborvitae on the right and the maple in the corner of the left hand side are staying. We are open to anything. The right hand side is considered full shade. The left hand side gets partial sun that runs in almost a diagnol line across the garden keeping the maple in enough sun to keep the leaves red. We would like to cover the basement window and the water meter. A local garden center suggested
a pyramid boxwood next to the stairs on both sides and an azalea in the center, along with 1 russian cypress (siberian carpet) in front on the left side and 2 on the right side. Liriope was suggested to surround the base of the japanese maple on the left. Any other advice, suggestions would be appreciated.

The suggestions of the nursery sound fine.
VERY cool house, BTW !!!

Would you consider additional plantings not just limited to the planter areas themselves?

You could put some sort of tree in the lawn area off to the left. Then sculpt out the areas on either side of the path and to the left and right of the main walkway...hopefully in curves...to soften all the straight lines as well as making it more inviting. (Sort of a serpentine effect that starts on the left side, then continues across the main walk to the right.)

LOTS of possibilites there.

Instead of an azalea, see if knockout roses are hardy in your zone. They would bloom all summer. That is nothing against azaleas. I have both plants and love them both. Do pyramid boxwoods get tall?

Hey Meg...another Jersey girl, yay!!!

Is that a dwarf jm? If it's not, the liriope would get too crowded, they spread like crazy.

I'm not a fan of boxwoods, I love azaleas and the encore series rebloom. Roses would look great too.
Daylilies would look good.
I agree with Jasperdale about planting along the walk.

Boxwood needs sun. Rhododendron on either side of the steps would do better.
