I have a Phal I bought last year from costco - while it was in beautiful bloom - over the year it has dropped nearly all it's leaves (I do not believe I ever over watered). I found a local orchid specialist online and he said before thowing out the plant - take it out of the pot and look a the roots. Since the were not black or rotted I went ahead and bought some planting media and clear pots with slits. (http://www.repotme.com/orchid-mix/Phal-Bark-Orchid-Mix.html) The bag said to soak the media but didn't say how long. I soaked it for about 1/2 hour. Now I have what looksl like chunks of bark in the pots. But when I look around at pictures in this forum - what I see looks more like the kind of woody stuff you find when you pull apart a "punky" log. It is very fiberous. Have I not soaked long enough? Does it take a long time for new potting mix to get that broke down look? And I THINK it's a Phal - could be something else. I bought it because I had guests in the guestroom and it was lovely - never thought it could liI could keep it alive - now I woud like to take good care of it. How critical is it for to have the right mix in the pot? The more I've read about the orchid in nature - the more I wonder if I'm torturing mine!
Thanks
