We have a tile store somewhat close by who puts a bin out front where they discard broken or discontinued tiles. Found out they would prefer that the tiles be taken as that saves them a trip to the dump. I was happy to oblige.

I use to make my rounds there on a regular basis and pick up the odds and ends. I had them stacked up and have been using the broken ones for outdoor mosaic projects with the thought that I would use the unbroken ones to tile my patio. The time has finally come to work on the patio and I started last weekend.

It is taking me much longer than I thought it would as I am trying to make some sort of pattern out of it. I am trying to match the size of the tile for rows and let the colors land where they land. I will mosaic the transition areas with broken tiles. Also, drew circles and half circles on the patio and I will do some sort of mosaic in those areas. Thought I would share and will show another picture when finished…

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback.

I have been lurking for a long time and finally thought I would jump in with my projects. I have gotten so many ideas from this site. Everyone on this site is so talented and I have been amazed at the knowledge and skill that I have seen presented here. Going to this site on a regular basis has become a pleasant habit.

I have only one thing to recommend---a good kneeler that won't mark up your tile when you start laying it. Your patio is going to look absolutely fantastic! And won't it be fun to tell people what you paid for the tile? LOL!

I laid & grouted my most recent batch of tile using this kneeler, and it was SOOOOO much easier to use and better for my sad old knees than fooling with kneepads, my folding kneeler (which left green paint that had to be cleaned off), folded towels and all the other stuff I tried. Oh, and it's great for gardening, too.

A great kneeler, but I have one I got from the Birds & Blooms country store that is padded and you can set it up one way and it is a seat and the other way is a kneeler with help from legs to help me get up. It does fold too. It runs around $40, but my son said he would pay for it so I now have a lot of help with my weeding. There are plastic feet on it perfect for any kind of job.

I have a plastic kneeler with a pad and handles for getting up, with makes a big difference for me. Then it can be turn over and use as a stool. It is a very handy item.

Helenchild that kneeler sounds like the one I have. Can;t get up once I get down so those handles do come in handy. I drag it from back yard to front yard all the time, saves on the sore knees.

What a great idea and who would have thought... A kneeler. I am going to get one. Thanks for the suggestions.

I am looking at both options and trying to make a decision. I really like the idea of a seat as well as a kneeler. And handles to help me stand up. What a concept. I need that as I am not that graceful. This would also make a great gift for my best friend as her birthday is coming up.

I worked on patio this weekend and it is coming along. Doing the broken tiles in between the full tiles in the areas that I had to leave spaces and I think it is coming out okay. This project is taking longer than I thought it would as all projects seem to. Isn’t that the way?

There is a carpet & tile store in the same place as the thrift store and I'm going to go in there and asked about tiles. I know they throw away carpet samples, bad thing is there is a large trash dumpster out in back and they throw away things before I can see them. Only day I go is Monday and forgot to go in and ask.

Here is an update to my patio that I have been working on. Taking much more time than I thought and if the temperature would just stay under 100 degrees, it would go faster. I had the red, yellow, orange and gold tiles that I picked up from a tile close out and only got a few but enough to do something. Can’t resist color…

Oh, look for the hidden Mickey.

Barbara - What a great job you are doing and I love the circles! What are you using for the pattern to make the circles? This is all outside, right? How did you level the ground and what are you setting them in? What great finds.

Thank you all for your kind words.

The original patio is concrete but that kind that has the pebbles in it so had a rough top. I put down hardi backer over that top to make it smooth. I had to glue the hardi backer on to the concrete with thinset. Once that was done, it was a smooth top.

I drew the large circle and half circles before I started laying the tile and then adjusted where necessary as in some areas the squares of tile would encroach into the circle areas. Once I finished laying all of the full tiles, then I started on the areas that were open and did broken tiles. I knew that I wanted to put circles within that large circle so I got some kitchen bowls and drew them in there. My husband had the idea about the hidden Mickey.

I am now working on another area which is smaller and doing something different. I will share that when finished. I am keeping the same colors but doing different patterns.

Off I go…
