This has volunteered in my garden, and is currently about 6" tall. But by the woody stem, I'd say it's a bush or even tree. The leaves are attractive, but it won't work where it is now. I'm trying to decide whether to transplant it or just pull it up. Anyone know what it is?
I guess it might be a kind of sumac. I just looked through the sumac listings, and don't see a leaf pattern quite like it. It has those four distinctive smaller leaflets, with a central larger leaflet. I suppose I might just transfer it somewhere out of the way and see what happens.
I agree - take caution. This could be an off shoot of the trumphet vine. Do you see that any of your neighbors have a vine producing red or yellow trumphet shaped flowers on a vine? I attached a photo of the vine coming up in my garden. This vine is really nasty! What happens is when the main plant is trimmed or cut down, the plant goes nuts and sends shoots out to incredible distances. I had one of these vines and was trying to get rid of it as advised by my local extention office - they advised NOT to cut on the plant. I was applying applications of round-up, then slowly cutting off the dead stuff and re-applying. Well my neighbor thought it would be OK to take off pickets of my fence, reach into my yard and cut the plant down - now, as you can see, these little sprouts are coming up everywhere!!! I'm not 100% sure that your picture is trumphet vine but take a look at my photos - this is it at an early stage, then it turns into a woody stem and TAKES OFF like crazy. If you think this is trumphet vine - the best idea is not to pull it, but apply an application of round up using a paper towel or glove. Do not spray, this will damage your other plants. Thanks for the warning. I think I'm OK as far as it being a trumpet vine. Your picture shows more than five leaflets, so I think I've got something else. But I'll keep a close eye on it anyway.
I think your plant is some type of sumac. The ones I've seen in Louisiana look like that. There are some types that will break u out just like poison ivy does but I don't know one from the other. Be careful handling it just in case.
cgustaf, in Louisana we call your vine, a buckvine. I spent a good part of my youth hoing them out of cotton. My wife saw one at Lowes and wanted to buy it. I thought I would have to hurt her.
