My grandparents came from Latvia, where Midsummer celebrations are still culturally very important. When I was a kid in the 1970s, my grandparents and their friends were still celebrating "John's Night" with all-night bonfire parties, here in the U.S.

My grandmother said that one custom was for young couples to wander off into the woods on John's Night "looking for fern blossoms," which were said to only appear that one night of the year. And when you came back hours later, empty-handed, no one could claim that you didn't at least *try* to find some...
