I bought a sad looking start of Dahlia imperialis ‘Double White’ last fall, and pruned it back early this spring. It has really taken off, and I am wondering about pruning it back. I got it from Annie's Annuals, and their website says to give it a severe prune in early summer to control the height. I am hesitant to do this, and honestly don't know how to even go about it. Am I supposed to lop off most of the new growth? I think I'm almost to the point where I'd have to take a saw to it. LOL. Is this summer pruning something that is commonly done, or should I just let it go wild? It is growing right next to a fence and I am tempted to just let it do its thing and hope for no high winds, but I'd love to know what others do with these monsters ;-).
