Heirloom seeds. Gardeners are their custodians. My "job" before I retired was curator of an historic house here in West Alabama (ca. 1840). We tested the middens behind the old outdoor kitchen. We found that fractured hog skulls were a prevalent item there. There were 5 brothers (and 3 sisters) who lived in the house - apparently they were partial to hog brains.
In the sand cellar under the old kitchen I found some fibers and seeds and decided to see if I could sprout them. Some seeds are viable for many years. And the temperature/humidity conditions under the sand cellar had been the same for more than a hundred years. I got a good crop of okra out of those seeds! I have no way of knowing how old the seeds were, but we all know okra has been a Southern favorite for a long long time.
What a treasure you came across, gloria! And finding those seeds that way is the absolute "funnest" way to discover heirlooms, eh?
I hope you are still growing and preserving those okra seeds each year.
"Next article"? Well, I tend to just read them these days. DG has gathered a great bunch of writers who do a fantastic job with each submission. Like others I tend to find pleasure enough in reading the offerings.
