I just read this article (Nov 2009) and wonder if it would work in Alaska (5a also). I have tried to break the habit of buying like a fool, and now that I am retired I am forced to cut back. So I have been shaking seed pods in the garden hoping for just what you were describing, although mostly with perennials. But I have some gorgeous California poppies that are supposed to be annuals here and wonder if they might self seed. (White Linen, Orange King, Ivory Castle, Mission Bells). I spread seeds from each late this fall so we will see what happens next spring --- so farrrrrr away.

There is no reason it shouldn't work. All of my poppies reseed themselves nicely.

Spring seems like a lifetime away...
