I have 2 pygmy date palms around 4' high that are getting crowded out by phormium & pampas grass. Photo not much help, but believe me they are in there somewhere! They seem happy enough & quite healthy but I was hoping I could move them out front where there is much more space, some morning shade but sometimes very windy.
The 'soil' is quite shallow (12") & under that porous bedrock but they seem very firm & well rooted after just 2 years.
I made a tentative attempt at digging around one in early spring but panicked when the rootball never loosened up & filled it back in. This doesn't seem to have upset it too much.
Is it feasible to move them without killing them off ? & if so when is the best time to attempt it as its now 25c+ until October.
I know its probably easier & safer to keep the phormium & p. grass in check but they seem to thrive in the heat & the palms were more attractive as stand alone specimens, so I'd like them to keep my c. revoluta company.
Advice or guidance most welcome.
