I was reading an older book on irises, and the author had a good tip ; when you see those notchy watery leaves that mean iris borer at work, just cut off that fan above the rhizome. That way all you lose is a fan, and the borer never has a chance to get into the ground and transform into an egg laying moth.
That's what I was doing today; the timing was perfect. There is a patch of iris where I ran out of Merit this spring, so I have been expecting them, and there they were! They were still very small little wormies, and they hadn't made it to the rhizome yet. I have heard of pinching the leaves to squish the borer, but I never know if I have got him or not. I would imagine I am ahead by cutting off the fan rather than waiting to dig them up and eliminate whole rhizomes because of infestation. Merit is a definite way to rid yourself of this problem, but
if you miss some or aren't able to apply it in a timely fashion, this is good to know also.
