I remember seeing one last year in bloom, not knowing what it was, but I was enchanted by the unusual flowers. Now I know what it is, thanks, Shar.
ROFL about Callie May!

Hey KY, it isn't even midnight here, I couldn't imagine what you were writing about.

It is an unusual plant. I wanted a picture of the root, which is very weird, but couldn't find one growing anywhere around here.

Thanks for writing...yes, Callie May was quite a character. Every single time she ever saw me at Aunt Bett's after the oak tree incident, she asked me: "Now whose child are you?" Every single time.

She was about as dense as she was wide.

LOL I hope I run across the plant again. It was on our property, but I can't remember exactly where. Now if I do see it, I'll think of you--and Callie May!

I hope you do too, and if you do, check out the root. That's the most interesting part of the whole plant.

Ha! I've never seen this plant but I remember a Callie May when I was a child.

A big woman who used to visit my mother and took a liking to me and told my mother she'd like to take me home and keep me. Scary! I would disappear under the bed whenever she came :-)

Callie May and the stone root gave me quite a chuckle to start my busy day, thanks to you, Shar. I'll read it again tonight for another delightful end to my hectic day.

Hi Joyce,
Yes there were Callie May's in all our lives, no doubt. And the cheek pinchers. I wasn't chubby but I did have cheeks and sometimes they were pinched so hard I wanted to kick the shins I could barely reach. I remember telling my mother I'd never need to wear 'rouge' since I would have permanently red cheek bones anyway. But they just kept on pinching. Great to hear from you.

Angie, I am glad I might have helped you to a good start for your busy day. Maybe you should start thinking 'retirement' every morning, that should bring a smile too. Thank you.

Hi Elena, thanks for writing. It is a little known plant, one I had very nearly forgotten till I remembered Callie May. The root is the interesting part. It was hard as a rock, and I threw plenty of them, being the champion lobber that I was. I don't remember ever knocking anybody out with one of my pitches, accuracy not being one of my talents, but I sure could pitch quite a distance.

Thank you ladies, you made me smile, too.

We have this growing here in our woods and I've transplanted two to the yard. I always have trouble remembering the name...but now there's no forgetting after that wonderful story ! Thanks for that !

Now I'm wanting to go dig up another one so I can check out the root. If I do, I'll post a pic.

Thanks Di...
I would really like to see a picture of that root, it is so unique!

And thanks for writing.
