Here is one of three Hillbilly tomatoes I have harvested so far this year. This one came from a plant growing in a straw bale. This plant is large and needs lots of room for its root system. I have another one of these Hillbillies growing in a 5 gallon grow bag and it is no where near the size of the one growing in the straw bale.. Next year it is more straw bales and 10 gallon grow bags for my maters.
The taste is unique and good. The skin is not tough and it is a meaty and juicy tomato. However, for just a few tomatoes per plant regardless of their size, the plant just isn't worth the time and effort it takes to grow it.
This one weighs just a little over 20 ozs even after a chunk was eaten out of it by a katydid last night. He was still munching on it when I picked it just a while ago. I should have picked it yesterday when I noticed it was ready. Ain't that the way it always is?
