I accidentally broke off a stem of a small plant I bought on ebay. The stem broke off at right at the bottom before it touches the soil. The stem has about 3 vines on it already. Does anyone know if I can replant this whole stem to propagate this plant? Or do I need to divide it into the 3 vines? How far down should I plant the stem? The nodes, I would assume are far apart, about 3 inches I'd say, that is if they are the leaf nodes...maybe the little dots on this cactus are the nodes? I have attached a photo of what my plant looks like here http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/11324. Hopefully someone will help, thank you

I have this plant and when a piece breaks off, I just lay the broken stem sideways flat on the soil and it usually puts out roots from the little nodes/joints. Since you have a stem with three other stems coming off of the main one, you can stick the main part of the stem down into the soil up to the node/joint where the three vines are coming out, and it should take root.

Good luck with your new plant!

Thank you! I will try this immediately. My stem is getting wrinkly...due to the lack of water...is it too late or still okay? Should I use any rooting powder?

I haven't used rooting powder on the Rhipsalis but it couldn't hurt. I use it on other plants and it encourages the formation of roots so you could try it, you may get roots faster.
