I found this spider in my pool in new jersey. It was about 6 or 7 inches in total length and scared the crap out of me.
please help.

This is fishing/dock/nursery web spider (family Pisauridae) in the genus Dolomedes - see http://tinyurl.com/let4wm for an image. They are harmless to humans, but can bite if mishandled. A leg span of more than 3.5" would be an exceptionally large specimen; people often overestimate the size of spiders, more so than for most other arthropods, and I'm not sure why.
