the stargazers have almost spent all their blooms. After those are long gone, how long do I leave up the stalks and foliage so the bulbs can gather energy?
You can either remove the top 1/3 of the stalk just below the lowest flower or snip off each flower stem. Leave the stem in place. It will eventually turn yellow or brown and will pull away from the bulb. Leaving the stem provides nutrition for the bulb insuring bloom for next year. I dig mine after 4-5 years and separate the bulblets and either plant them in other locations or give them to friends.
