I am not sure but it might me some kind of miniature Hollyhock (Alcea rosea). As I know they are biannual but do reseed - so they behave more like perennials. May be that's why you lost your second plant - reseeding is not guaranteed.

Perhaps a Sidalcea - you certainly get those round leaves at the base and lobed upper leaves on that. Stems and flowers could also suggest Sidalcea.
Or perhaps a Malva (mallow).

Is it wet and marshy there? Maybe it's a marshmallow.

Though I'm almost clueless, I'd be inclined to agree with SunnyBorders.
