Thanks, Baja :). Methinks it's a dahlia... but not very sure! Got it from HD last year because I felt bad nobody was paying any attention to it just because it was scraggly and had all but one broken flower :(... The plant was only around 18 inches when I "adopted" it :)...

Yes, looks like a dahlia. No idea which one though.

Dahlia was my first guess, too. What a deal you got.

plants just like animals and people love when one adopts them...

I also adopted a Hardenbergia (thanks for the ID!) that looked pitiful but now has been growing like crazy! Can't wait to see it flower :)... My hubby thinks I'm nuts when I come home from HD with a carful of "dead" (according to him) weeds! :) It's just rewarding when these plants thrive after giving them a place to call home... Yea, I do have a marshmallow (softie) side! :) (don't we all?)...

My utmost goal actually is to recreate my mom's garden in our backyard as a tribute to her... The only obstacle for me is orchids! :)

Yes, it' some kind of dinner-plate dahlia, 100%. Looks similar to Dahlia 'Hakuyou' at http://www.dahlias.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=...
But it cat be any other cultivar - there are hundreds of them and some are VERY similar.
