Here is a spider that makes a big web over my pond. He and his cousin are there only at night, each in their own web. They are approximately 1inch tip to tip.
Any ideas?
This is a long-jawed orb weaver, family Tetragnathidae; likely in the genus Tetragnatha - see http://tinyurl.com/mwaegx for an example. They frequently construct their webs over water, and like all other orb weavers, are harmless to humans.
Incidentally, with your sharing of the pix HelenC, I think that helps me isolate my spider in question that hides itself in the Rose's petals. Long slender body with extra long, long legs.
