Have the members on this forum ever done a group seed swap????
The reason I ask ...
I don't know about everyone else here, but this recession has really pinched my budget. I trade as well as share MG/JMG seeds every year. In doing so, I send out a LOT of bubble envies. The postage just went up again and boy! is it ever expensive to mail anything these days. What the USPS now charges for a small bubble envelope is ridiculous!!! I was sitting here figuring how much it is going to cost me this year to mail bubble envies. I sent out over 40 last year and I know it ran me close to $80.00. That may not seem like a lot, but to someone like me on a very tight budget ... it's gonna be difficult this year given my situation.
I ran a group seed swap a couple years ago on another forum. It was a huge success and probably very cost effective for everyone.
Here is how it worked:
Everyone collected seeds for this swap. Put them in individual seed baggies with labels and what DGer they were from. The year and season they were collected (EX: Summer 2009). Purchased a decent sized bubble envie to send them to me. Included a return label, enough postage to send their bubble envie back to them, and a wish list of what seeds they wanted. I did my best to fill everyone's wish list.
I reused the bubble envie that each member sent me and filled them with their wish list of seed packets, used the postage they sent me, and mailed them all off! Everyone was happy, the expense was minimual, and everyone got lots of seeds. I did not base how much folks got back according to what they sent. I merely filled each wish list. I, personally, don't care if I get more or less packets of seeds compared to what I donated for the swap. The goal was for everyone to get a nice selection of seeds for Spring/Summer growing!
Would there possibly be an interest in such a seed swap here for Winter 2010? I promise to get the seeds out to everyone in time for Spring sowing!
The only issue I see would be for those folks whose growing season is opposite of ours here in the USA. And postage for those folks might be a bit of a challenge for me, too! LOL! But I would love to included everyone in such a swap! :-)
I'd love to hear your opinion of this idea! Thanks!
