This Spring I moved into my first apartment & found amongst my clutter a packet of morning glory seeds from my childhood. It's from "American Seed" and all it says about the flower is "Morning Glory" and "Choice Mixed Colors." I planted all of the seeds and just got this one plant. I love it a ton and want to grow it again next year, but have no clue about what species it is. I would collect my own seeds, but I haven't seen any yet (have been getting blooms for almost a month). If anyone grows this and knows what it is called (or has any insights on why my plant hasn't produced any seeds) I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you very much in advance!

I am going to ask you something - Does it bloom as soon as the plant comes up to a foot or 2? Grandpa Otts does that while the other two varieties bloom much later in the season.

When I was a kid, that was what all morning glories looked like.

The fact that a very old seed was viable indicates that it is probably not a hybrid, but is more likely to be of heirloom stock.

I'm surprised that it hasn't set seeds, though. They always re-seeded themselves, and were capable of becoming invasive. Do you have enough pollinators around? If not, you might try manually pollinating them each morning.

It looks like Heavenly Blue to me.
I grow these every year - sometimes from seed, and sometimes from self-seeding.
Either way, it's the only Morning Glory I grow.

The photo here
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/Goldberry_1246821256_255.jp...

shows 2 completely different species of Ipomoea intertwined together...

The blooms in the photo are
Ipomoea purpurea and look like a relatively pale GrandPa Ott's...
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/30315/

The sepals along the center of the the support are those of Ipomoea purpurea in contrast to the flowerbuds visible in the upper left of the photo which are those of
Ipomoea tricolor
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/106781/

Hope that helps...

TTY,...

P.S. - President Tyler is supossed to produce flowers that are a relatively dark blue but larger than those of other Ipomnoea purpurea and so far I haven't found a consistent President Tyler despite the name being used relatively frequently...

Oh Roxxanne - I WISH I could find a Heavenly Blue like yours.
Maybe I'm buying from the wrong seed company.
Now that you mention it, I used to have your colour of Heavenly Blue, but for years now the colour I get is more purple... siiiiiiiiiigh.
I thought they'd changed their packaging, and their colour was "off", but I don't get the true blue.
I think I buy McKenzie seeds. Where do you get yours from?

Hi - WalMart is where I've gotten them, usually - and they're really a purple, not blue.
I've also gotten them from GCs.
The pkg says "Heavenly Blue"
dunno if they are colour-blind, or just got the wrong seeds LOL

Thank you all for the wonderful insights! I apologize for my delayed response, I have been swamped with paper writing. After reading everything and doing some additional research, I am 99.9% positive this is a Star of Yelta. Malus2006 your question was particularly helpful. I remember distinctly that the heavenly blue morning glory I planted at the same time & in the same container bloomed significantly earlier than my purple morning glory. I didn't have any blooms on the purple plant for a long time, but it grew taller faster. The purple morning glory is now twice the height of the heavenly blue next to it. I got (what I believe is) a seed pod today, so now I can regrow this beauty no matter what (hopefully). Thank you again for all of the help!
