I bought a redbud tree from Aldis last spring. Of course it was just a stick. What do you expect for $15.? Well, I'm a patient woman, gardening teaches you all about delayed gratification!

All summer it stayed a stick and late into the fall not even a hint of life, no leaves, nothing.

Then just before frost tiny, little leaves appeared. Good! It's alive.

This spring I was so looking forward to flowers! Nothing. Just a stick again. I waited patiently all through March, April, May and half of June. I scratched the bark, it looked dead. So I bought another little tree at a road side stand and determined to try again.

I cut the tree off with clippers at the base, and planted the new tree at a different location, thinking maybe this wasn't a good place for a redbud.

Lo, and behold! A week or so later the tree springs to life and shoots up a tender sprout. Now it's the beginning of July and that sprout is 4 feet tall sporting 4 branches! And it have HUGE heart shaped leaves!

I'm so excited and happy I didn't pull it up by the roots!

There's a lesson here somewhere.

Can't wait for next spring. I'm definitely expecting flowers at last.

Thanks for the wonderful article! There's a redbud salad in my future. :)

iloveperennials,

How exciting! I've found that once a Redbud really takes root, they do well. (At least around here.)

thanks for reading and commenting1
