I planted a redbud in my garden 3yrs ago. I'm still waiting to see the blooms!!!It's growing wonderfully! Just no blooms...Maybe due to my climate? I live in Newfoundland, Canada.
Not sure about the weather in Canada; it might be the climate. I've had very small and young trees blooms a tiny bit. Don't give up; since it is living, it might just bloom next year!
Such a pleasant and packed full of information article! I lived in St. Louis for about 4 years and fell in love with redbuds there. I planted one at a place I still own up that way just before I left 5 years ago. I wonder if it has withstood the nasty weather without me being there too care for it.
I've become addicted to tropical plants, the more rare, the better! Unfortunately, I came here thinking tropical meant sun and humidity, but it really usually means shade, at least for the large leaf plants I'm drawn to... and I'm limited on shade at my home. I am NOT a sun person, so I only go out to garden early am or wait until after 5! I do have to deal with the occasional snake but a quick run inside and scratching for an hour or so (seeing them makes my flesh crawl) takes care of that. I love the casual lifestyle as I rarely have to dress up to go anywhere. My favorite time here is from October to April. Sure beats the Oct-Apr up North as I hated dealing with the snow and ice! The threat of hurricanes does not phase me as I lived through Andrew in Miami. Lost those personal treasures there and know that whatever I have now can be replaced with the insurance claim. This is probably more than you were asking for... sorry.
Take good care and happy gardening! (you can get a better idea as to the Florida weather and gardening if you take a peek at the Florida gardening thread -the chit chat. That's mostly where I hang out.)

We lost most everything in a house fire when I was just a preteen so I know what you mean.
I miss the NY weather in the summer...but I don't miss the lake effect snows in the winter so I hear you there, too. I'd probably never move back to NY because of the horrible winters. Here, if we get snow or ice, 90% of the time it is gone within a day or two.
