I believe the camera referred to as a second choice to the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS is the "Pansonic Lumix " DMC-FZ28.
Be helpful for those deciding what to buy to give the full model.
Article says the Canon is a better choice than the Lumix FZ28 because of its glass (lens)
The FZ28 has a Leica lens. Leica is the gold standard for "glass". The Lumix FZ28 lens is brighter than the Canon lens,
Check both out at full and half zoom. The Canon "glass" is way
behind the Leica lens at full zoom. Nature shooters in low light will do better with the Panasonic.
Some other advantages to the FZ28
It shoots in RAW. The Canon does not. For anyone who enjoys photo-editing, this rules the Canon out. For reducing "noise" in 400 ISO and higher shoots, having the ability to shoot in RAW is a big advantage.
Battery life is better.
Canon usually charges a premium for its name. Panasonic is innovative (see the micro-two thirds G1) , has
no legacy issues which tie it down to old technology and is an aggressive price cutter.
Before Christmas, the FZ28 was $90 less than the Canon.
Yes, you are right, that is the model of Lumix I was referring to. I apologize for not mentoning it. I should have considering there are many different models of Lumix cameras. I thank you for bringing up these points about the differences between the Canon and the Panasonic. Either camera is a great choice but I profiled the Canon because for the average consumer who takes an image and then wants to post it on the Internet or email it, the Canon -- in my opinion -- is the better option. Our church has a Lumix and it is a superb camera and it has received consistently high reviews.
Regarding RAW, I would agree with you that anyone that enjoys photo editing would not choose this camera because you don't have that option. I shoot in RAW only and love post processing as much as taking the pictures by themselves.
I mentioned the Lumix because it is a superior camera and I thought of profiling it as my recommendation but for ease of use and brand recognition, I went with the Canon. Considering your comments, it may have been better to bring the Lumix more into the light because it deserves a chance and I appreciate you highlighting it now. I think that either camera would suit most photographers wanting to prepare for DSLR photography. I have heard of the G1 and yes, it is innovative. In fact, I have my eye on it as another possible back-up. It takes me forever to come to a decision though. Considering it is cheaper than another manufacturer's equivalent, it could serve as a good back-up. I do tend to lust after the Canons or better yet Nikons but from what I understand from what I have read, the quality is declining and other companies (like Panasonic) are ready to fill in the gaps. It is win/win because if the the big two get enough competition, they will work harder to supply better products.
Thank you once again for your input and when people are shopping, they would not be disappointed with the Lumix.
