I live in Dublin, Ohio and have a huge problem with grubs in my flower beds. The Franklin Conservatory (of Columbus, Ohio) suggested I get outside early in the morning (Japanese Beetles are sluggish in the morning) with a small bucket of soapy water and knock them off into it, where they drown. This does work, but is time consuming and not practical unless you have the time and desire to do this each morning! Starlings (birds introduced to the U.S. from the U.K.) are the only predators of the Japanese Beetle I've heard of. I'm happy to hear that chickens enjoy them, but chickens don't roam free to effect change. I won't use pesticides on the flowers they attack most because Hummingbirds are attracted to the same flowers as the beetles. I seems hopeless. I'm considering getting rid of my prized flowers!
