I just wanted to share a surprising tidbit. I have a bazillion plants for my B'Flies and hummers. Most of my garden was planted solely for them. I put in a Thai cooking garden for myself- Lemongrass, Galangal ginger http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/60085/ and Thai Basil. The flowers of the ginger are small, pale white w/ a few thin stripes of color on the petals, and minimally fragrant if at all. Not the least bit red or showy in any way. We have at least 2 Rubythroat Hummingbirds, at least one of each gender. I have other Gingers but the hummers are not impressed w/ those. They ABSOLUTELY love the Galangal, so much so that if I only had one plant for them, this would be it!. I just thought folks would like to know as I've never seen this one mentioned in any lists of hummer attractants. The neat thing is the plants are attractive as a subtle backdrop, easy to grow, spread QUITE nicely w/o being invasive. They grow/ blossom in FSu/PSu/& even in PSh. While they appreciate water, they're not hogs about it. Mostly they just get rain and maybe supplemental water ~ one a month now that they've made a nice clump together. I've divided them to share many times and they fill right back in.
