| Hi everyone, Ive been putting off my horse doing other things. And also scarred to start her. Dont want to mess her up. But im asking for alot of help from all of you. First of all should I spay paint the body, and what color would you paint her? And how would I fill the holes? Or just glue a jewel over it?. As I said I really need help. Linda |
JuneyBug Dongducheon CpCasey South Korea (Zone 4b)
September 18, 2009 10:07 AM Post #7077250
| The holes were origionally for wooden dowels to go through ... hmm, You may want to put dowels in them so that you could hang the horse from a stand of some sort or the ceiling...
What colors are you using as the main and accent colors in your home? If it were mine, I would have some of the details in a light yellow and seafoam green and perhaps the body of the horse in a cobalt blue - a reversal of the main & accent colors in my house, see what I mean?
I would spray the body, the saddle and the main&tail and hand paint the smaller details. Paint pens come in different sizes and are a lot easier for me to use than cans of paint and brushes and I can just put the cap on them and walk away when life calls. Really user frendly.
After doing the big paint jobs, I would probably work on the details over a couple of months when I am not into doing stuff for Christmas...this is a busy time of the year for me (& I would probably gaudy it up with about 20 different colors. ) |

| Bright colors such as cobalt are always fun, but you might also consider another possibility.
I'd use a two-step porcelain crackle finish and an antiqueing glaze over it to make the horse look old and weathered. If you've never used this kind of crackle, it's the one that creates fine lines, not the gaping spaces. You might paint the body a creamy color, and then the glaze will darken it. You'd want to shade the glaze darker in places such as on the body around the saddle. The glaze isn't hard to work with this way.
Then I'd go crazy with color on the saddle, painting designs or whatever struck my fancy. In order to keep the painting style uniform, you'd want to do the same crackle finish and glaze on the saddle. You might even paint designs on the hooves.
I'd fill the holes in. I think jewels in those spots would look like you were trying to cover holes. :) |

| I wasn't clear about the dowels. If you don't want to hang it as Juney suggested, then just try filling the holes with dowels that don't extend out past the body. |

| You can use auto body dent filler (Bondo) , stuff the hole with wadded up news paper, to keep the filler from falling thru, leaving the hole about 1/4" deep & fill the rest with the filler. You could also use the same stuff that you made the hoof out of.

| Linda - When I try something new and it doesn't come out right (to put it mildly) I, too, get disgusted with myself and often quite depressed.
I do something else - maybe something I'm already good at - and let what I've learned from the disaster soak into my subconscious.
My first mosaic was also a disaster. I try to tell myself it means there's lots of room for improvement!! But there's no doubt it's a bummer.

November 04, 2009 11:52 AM Post #7240528
| Yesterday someone told me about a technique I'm going to try. She said she was helping a girl's soccer coach who told the team she didn't want them dwelling on goals them missed or plays they didn't make. They were instructed to "flush" them away with an imaginary toilet handle they were to "carry" on their belts at all times. She wanted them to actually make the flushing motion whenever they had a negative thought, and then move on.
I can relate to your frustration, Linda, but it was so smart of you to try practice pieces instead of starting right away on your horse! I haven't done the crackle painting, but a friend has and said it was tricky to get it right. I have done some mosaic pieces though, and my first one is now partially hidden amongst the plants in my garden because it wasn't all that great. The second one is MUCH better, and when I get around do doing the third, I've learned enough to make it even better. So keep practicing, be patient with yourself, and FLUSH...LOL!! |
Samigal (Pegi) Norwalk, CA (Zone 10b)
November 04, 2009 02:42 PM Post #7241211
| Ima, I sure like the idea of FLUSH for all negative notions. I sure get a lot of them and never learned to flush them away. Now I will carry the handle in my pocket, or not pocket I guess around my neck.
I do want to try mosaics, but keep putting it off.. On another thread, wish I could remember, there was a horse done in small white tiles, saddle in old costume jewerly and it was beautiful. I'm going to have to locate that thread because she hadn't finished it and I don't want to miss the final product. I should have taken notes, I need notes for everything else. |
