Something is eating my summer crookneck squash. I think it's chipmunks or perhaps squirrels. Any ideas on how to protect the vines from these pests? Thanks.
You can set some small animal traps and relocate them. If you have a cat they can control mice,chipmunks and if they are like my cats they can get the bluff in on the squirrels too but then you need to fence in the garden or put small wire cages around each young plant to keep the cats from digging and using it for a toilet.
You might want to try dog fur as a repellent. A pantyhose foot stuffed with dog fur (not hair, like from a poodle) and tied to a stake next to your plants will repel many rodents. They think a predator is nearby. The fur needs to be replenished after about a month, or oftener if it rains.
If you don't have a fuzzy dog, try one of the pet grooming establishments. They will happily give you clippings and combings, although they may look at you a little funny.
I think I am in luv with Texasroses. Speaking of Texas roses, Marlin isn't close to Tyler is it? Got a couple of roses my sister--in-- law picked up from me on the way home from Dallas.

Nope, Marlin is about 25 miles south of Waco in Central Texas. We love it here on our little farm, but Tyler would be a great place to live! Your sister-in-law must be wonderful to pick up roses for you on her way home. Ask her if she would like to adopt me.

Tell you about the sister-in-law, she know who raises the maters, squash, cantalopes, lettuce, radishs, green beans, butter beans, beets,and cucumbers. Not only that but I do all the pickin. Sometimes, when she can, my little petit brown eyed beauty of a wife of 48 years, helps.
Abiline is as far west as I've been in Texas. Sorry old son-in-law took my grandbabies out there for 3 years. Didn't worry me a whole lot about the daughter, she is just like me, contrary as all get out. Then the joker carried them to Germany for 5 years and for the last 9 in Ohio. I put my pistol between his eyes once when showed up at my house after mid-night. Came in from off shore and came straight to see the girl. Didn't even blink an eye with S&W between his eyes. Knew I'd lost her when he didn't run. Might ought to have shot him.
